A beloved Bay Area ski destination is undergoing a sweeping transformation, with Sugar Bowl Resort launching a multiyear, $100 million overhaul aimed at modernizing its 87-year-old mountain operations<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The project kicked off last summer with visible changes already underway, including the removal of the resort\u2019s historic wooden sundeck.<\/p>\n

In its place, a new dining terrace<\/a> has been built alongside a revamped food service program and updated menu offerings.<\/p>\n

Now, attention shifts to a far more ambitious phase set to reshape how guests arrive and access the slopes starting next winter.<\/p>\n

At the center of the upgrades is the replacement of Sugar Bowl\u2019s 73-year-old gondola<\/a>, a landmark piece of ski history that first opened in 1953 as the West Coast\u2019s inaugural ski gondola.<\/p>\n

The aging lift, which carries visitors roughly two-thirds of a mile from highway parking over forested terrain to the village core, is being dismantled this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The new system, an Austrian-made upgrade featuring eight-person cabins, will dramatically boost capacity from 800 passengers per hour to 1,800.<\/p>\n

The $50 million project also includes new terminals, support towers and a refurbished parking garage, with completion targeted for December, the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

Beyond speed and capacity, resort leaders say the overhaul is part of a broader effort to improve the guest experience from the moment visitors arrive.<\/p>\n

Sugar Bowl\u2019s ownership structure sets it apart from many Sierra ski resorts.<\/p>\n

Modern gondolas, like Vail\u2019s \u201cGondola One,\u201d feature heated seats and Wi-Fi. Sugar Bowl Resort<\/p>\n

It is privately held and governed by a San Francisco-based corporation representing roughly 170 investor-homeowners in the village, a setup leaders say shields it from the industry\u2019s push to maximize skier volume, according to the Chronicle. <\/p>\n

A second major project is also underway at the base area: a $15 million renovation of Judah Lodge, the resort\u2019s central hub for tickets, rentals, lessons and ski school.<\/p>\n

The current arrival process, where guests pass a shipping and receiving area before reaching ticket windows, is being completely reworked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Under the redesign, visitors will be able to drive directly to the entrance to unload passengers and equipment, easing the need to haul gear across the parking lot.<\/p>\n

In 1939,\u00a0Walt Disney\u00a0was a primary investor, providing $2,500 to help get the resort off the ground. Sugar Bowl Resort<\/p>\n

Inside, guests will enter a large, glass-filled sports shop connected to a broad staircase leading up to ticketing and rental services.<\/p>\n

From there, skiers will step outside onto a newly planned \u201csnow beach,\u201d a wide, level staging area that will link directly to beginner terrain and base lifts.<\/p>\n

The lodge\u2019s third floor will continue operating as a cafe and dining space, preserving its role as an on-mountain gathering spot even as the rest of the building is reimagined.<\/p>\n
