{"id":28626,"date":"2025-10-29T13:59:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T13:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/28626\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T13:59:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T13:59:10","slug":"oakland-honors-black-panther-co-founder-bobby-seale-with-a-day-and-a-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/28626\/","title":{"rendered":"Oakland honors Black Panther co-founder Bobby Seale with a day and a street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He\u2019s long been a legendary national figure and recently, Bobby Seale was memorialized by Oakland, the birthplace of the Black Panther Party he co-founded.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That changed last week, when a crowd that included Seale and his family, as well as city, state and federal officials gathered for the renaming of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 57th Street as Bobby Seale Way.\u00a0 The location has significance for Seale, who once lived in the North Oakland neighborhood and then set up the Black Panther Party\u2019s first office there.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony occurred on Oct. 22, Seale\u2019s 89th birthday, which the City Council designated Bobby Seale Day. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still have things to do,\u201d Seale said in remarks at the ceremony. \u201cOur constitution, democratic civil human rights, is still at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He talked about working with his father to build homes as an early example of his work to uplift communities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"921\" src=\"https:\/\/oaknorth.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Seale-3-e1761693860803-1024x921.jpg\" alt=\"A older man in a black cap and glasses stands at a microphone and podium, surrounded by people who are all standing very close to him in front of a cluster of trees.\" class=\"wp-image-143602\"  \/>Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale addresses the crowd, with Mayor Barbara Lee to his right. (All photos by Emily Tenorio Molina)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m lucky to have my family and people to lean on from a young kid,\u201d Seale said. \u201cIt was something to grow up and have all those skills as a kid.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lifelong Oakland resident Leslie Sparks, who was among the 200 or so people who came out for the ceremony, said she was overjoyed to see the Bobby Seale Way sign in her neighborhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming for our legendary leader to get his flowers while he\u2019s here,\u201d\u00a0 she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seale co-founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland in 1966 with Huey P. Newton to bring more political power to the Black community. They started a children\u2019s food program in the city, held voter registration drives and advocated for Black representation in city government.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland rapper Mistah F.A.B. hosted the celebration, which included Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee, U.S. Rep. Lateefah Simon, and State Sen. Jesse Arregu\u00edn..\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBobby Seale and the Black Panther Party were visionaries, and they knew what serving the people meant,\u201d Lee said. \u201cThey understood that we were connected to the rest of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/oaknorth.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Seale-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A large crowd of people are outside with trees in the background. Upfront, is a man in a black cap and glasses, holding a phone up to the camera.\" class=\"wp-image-143604\"  \/>Bobby Seale (front right) holds up a photo of Barbara Lee during a ceremony honoring him. <\/p>\n<p>Seale\u2019s activism has inspired countless residents to get involved in their communities and support Black resilience efforts, Lee said, adding that he was one of her mentors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s, Seale worked at the <a href=\"https:\/\/localwiki.org\/oakland\/Black_Panther_Party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Oakland Neighborhood Anti-Poverty Center<\/a>, teaching youth about the history of Black community-led action.
