{"id":288232,"date":"2026-04-27T15:26:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T15:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/288232\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T15:26:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T15:26:10","slug":"californians-who-leave-state-save-672-a-month-on-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/288232\/","title":{"rendered":"Californians Who Leave State Save $672 a Month on Housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">Saddled with high housing costs, many <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/California\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">California<\/a> residents are departing the state for more affordable locations and greater financial security, recent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/capolicylab.org\/priced-out-relocation-amidst-californias-affordability-crisis\/\">research<\/a> reveals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">Los Angeles County suffered a population decline of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-04-09\/los-angeles-population-shrinking\">54,000 residents<\/a> from 2024 to 2025 as more people moved out than in\u2014and many of those leaving say housing prices are partly to blame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">California\u2019s median home listing price is currently $736,500, but prices in the state&#8217;s major metros sit far higher\u2014$1,096,500 in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Los-Angeles_CA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a> and $985,000 in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/San-Francisco_CA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">San Francisco<\/a>, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/realtor.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Realtor.com\u00ae<\/a> data. <\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">On the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/research\/march-2026-rent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rental side<\/a>, median monthly rents are $2,691 in the San Francisco metro and $2,760 in the Los Angeles metro, compared with a typical rent of $1,669 across the country&#8217;s 50 largest cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/capolicylab.org\/\">California Policy Lab at UC Berkeley<\/a> found that people who move away from the Golden State relocate to neighborhoods where they save $672 each month on housing costs, including rent or mortgage, utilities, property taxes, and insurance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">For renters, rent typically drops by about 30%\u2014or roughly $631\u2014in their new neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the median home price in their destination cities is nearly $398,000 lower on average, a 48% decrease compared to the California communities they leave behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">\u201cThe price tag has gone up on the California dream, and many families are leaving the state for more affordable places,\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/capolicylab.org\/news\/priced-out-new-research-reveals-who-is-leaving-california-where-they-go-and-whether-it-pays-off\/\">says<\/a>\u00a0study co-author Evan White, executive director of the California Policy Lab at UC Berkeley. \u201cThe difference these moves make is stark.\u00a0Their destination neighborhoods are half as expensive, and they end up much more likely to own a home within just a few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">Seven years after leaving California, former residents are about 48% more likely to own a home than similar Californians who stayed in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">Wealth advisor Clint McCalla told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/news\/trends\/where-wealthy-millennials-moving-to-and-from\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Realtor.com in 2024<\/a> that he moved from California to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Texas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Texas<\/a> in large part due to the cost of living. <\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">&#8220;We rented a house in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/San-Diego_CA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">San Diego<\/a>,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The cost of living was far too high to justify staying. I didn&#8217;t feel like we would ever be in the position to get ahead in California,\u00a0with how things were trending. Almost everything costs less in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Austin_TX\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Austin<\/a>. Housing is the biggest savings for our family. We&#8217;ve been able to buy a wonderful home in an excellent school district with great neighbors, sunset views, and an exceedingly friendly deer population.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Housing affordability pressures<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">A new study by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260423780968\/en\/In-New-Poll-L.A.-City-Voters-Send-Clear-Message-to-State-and-Local-Officials-and-Candidates-Build-More-Housing-Now\">Los Angeles Business Council Institute<\/a> finds that housing affordability pressures remain widespread across Los Angeles, with 7 in 10 Angelenos reporting difficulty affording housing. That figure includes more than half of homeowners and 86% of renters. The report also notes that three-quarters of renters have considered leaving Los Angeles altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">\u201cDespite billions of dollars in investment and new policies, housing concerns have only become more acute for Angelenos throughout the city, regardless of their age, income, or race,\u201d says LABC President Mary Leslie in a statement shared with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/Realtor.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Realtor.com\u00ae<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">A separate <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ucla.app.box.com\/s\/xvnrvyzugaakpptqeaqem4us6gq2iab0\">survey<\/a> from UCLA similarly underscores the strain, finding that Los Angeles County\u2019s quality of life has fallen to its lowest level on record amid rising housing costs, economic uncertainty and growing anxiety about the future.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles skyline is seen in a file photo. A new study finds 7 in 10 Angelenos report difficulty affording housingGetty ImagesLos Angeles insider weighs in on the exodus<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">Real estate agent Jameson Tyler Drew, president of Anubis Properties in the L.A. area, tells Realtor.com that the contrast between Los Angeles and other parts of the country becomes especially clear when he travels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I travel to the Midwest, I\u2019m constantly reminded that the cost of living isn\u2019t the same as in Los Angeles, and the pace of life is much slower,\u201d says Drew. \u201cThe taxes on a modest suburban home in Los Angeles could be the down payment for a very nice house in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Chicago_IL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chicago<\/a> or <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Indianapolis_IN\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Indianapolis<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">Drew notes that broader economic shifts have also weighed on the region\u2019s housing market. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t help the real estate industry when the staples of the L.A. economy have dried up or moved on,\u201d he says, adding that many jobs tied to moviemaking have long since left the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">As costs continue to rise, he believes affordability has reached a breaking point for many residents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">\u201cIs the state becoming cost-prohibitive for most people? Sadly, yes,\u201d says Drew. \u201cThe clients and family who left L.A. for greener pastures are thriving for the most part. Yes, they all say the same things: They miss In-N-Out and the weather. But it\u2019s hard to see a future here if you are just trying to start a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">Drew also described a challenging employment landscape. <\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">\u201cRegarding the job market in Los Angeles, it\u2019s just about as bleak as it is anywhere else in the country,\u201d says Drew. \u201cThere are many job listings out there, but none whose wages can afford a $4,000-a-month mortgage. The entertainment industry has been dead for years now, with most of its workers scattered to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/realestateandhomes-search\/Atlanta_GA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Atlanta<\/a> or Toronto. Other industries throughout the area are feeling the effects of $5 to $6 gasoline and have stopped hiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">With wages lagging behind housing costs, Drew says many would-be buyers are choosing to leave. <\/p>\n<p class=\"base__StyledType-rui__sc-18muj27-0 IEPPf sc-7dicpk-0 ccZqsH core-paragraph\">\u201cWith wages not catching up to rent hikes and mortgage payments, tons of prime buyers are looking elsewhere for their futures\u2014and I don\u2019t blame them,\u201d he says. \u201cI am the last member of my high school friend group still living in L.A.; the rest scattered to greener pastures long ago. With an average home price hovering at $900,000 [in L.A.
