The enforcement effort will take place at all hours, according to a release. “Speeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes on California’s roadways,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a statement. “When drivers choose to exceed safe speeds, they reduce their ability to react and increase the risk for everyone on the road. Slowing down is one of the simplest steps that drivers can take to protect themselves and others.” CHP said officers issued 491,000 tickets last year for speed-related violations. CHP’s records show that last year alone, there were 110,000 crashes that resulted from unsafe speeds, leading to more than 400 deaths and more than 68,000 injuries. The agency highlighted a pilot program with the Department of Motor Vehicles that automatically sends notice of speeding tickets for drivers going more than 100 mph to the DMV’s Driver Safety Branch, which could then suspend or revoke a license.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

Attention drivers, the California Highway Patrol plans to crack down on speeding for a 24-hour “maximum enforcement” period this week.

The operation is planned from 6 a.m. on Tuesday to 5:59 a.m. on Wednesday.
