April 28 (Reuters) – The City of San Francisco and the Port of Oakland have settled their trademark dispute over \u200cthe use of “San Francisco” in the Oakland airport’s name, according to \u200ca press release issued Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The Port of Oakland had previously decided to change its airport’s name \u200bto “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.” San Francisco argued in a lawsuit that the name change would cause confusion with its San Francisco International Airport.<\/p>\n
The agreement allows the Port of Oakland to call its airport “Oakland San Francisco Bay \u200cAirport” but limits its usage \u2060of “San Francisco” and “International,” the press release said.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re proud Oakland fought for, and preserved the right to retain our airport\u2019s \u2060full name that puts Oakland first and recognizes OAK\u2019s location on the San Francisco Bay,\u201d Port of Oakland attorney Mary Richardson said in a statement.<\/p>\n
San Francisco city \u200battorney \u200bDavid Chiu said the city was “pleased that \u200bwe could come to a \u200cmutual resolution that accomplishes Oakland\u2019s goals while still protecting the San Francisco International Airport trademark.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Port of Oakland announced plans to change the name of its airport in March 2024. San Francisco sued Oakland for infringing its airport’s trademarks that April, arguing the Oakland airport’s similar new name would confuse \u200ctravelers.<\/p>\n
U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson temporarily blocked \u200bthe name change later that year, finding “San \u200bFrancisco Bay Oakland International Airport” \u200bwould likely mislead consumers into thinking it is affiliated with \u200cthe city of San Francisco.<\/p>\n
The port \u200bhad argued that the \u200bnew name accurately described the airport’s location on San Francisco Bay, and said airports in Chicago, Dallas, London, Paris and Beijing peacefully \u200bshared their cities’ names.<\/p>\n
Oakland’s \u200cairport is 12 miles (19 km) east of San Francisco and just \u200bover 30 miles from San Francisco International Airport.<\/p>\n
