THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE PROJECT IMPROVES OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE IN NEED THROUGHOUT THE GREATER SACRAMENTO REGION BY PROVIDING HEALTH, EDUCATION, CAREER DEVELOPMENT, AND MUCH MORE. THIS WEEKEND, THEY’RE HOSTING AN EVENT DESIGNED TO SUPPORT NEW MOMS. AND THIS MORNING WE’RE JOINED BY EMMA MCCRACKEN, WHO IS A LACTATION CONSULTANT, AND WILFREDO CRUZ, WHO IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CRP. THANK YOU BOTH FOR BEING WITH US THIS MORNING. APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU FOR HAVING US. FIRST OF ALL, LET’S TALK ABOUT THE EVENT ITSELF. WHEN IS IT AND WHAT DO YOU THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW? ABSOLUTELY. OUR EVENT IS THIS FRIDAY, MAY 1ST. IT’S OUR 26TH ANNUAL BREASTFEEDING CELEBRATION. IT WILL BE HELD AT HOWARD PARK IN SACRAMENTO FROM 10 A.M. TO 1 P.M. AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF FUN THINGS TO DO. WE’LL HAVE OVER 20 COMMUNITY PARTNERS COME OUT WITH RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN. LET’S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT BREASTFEEDING. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT LACTATION, RIGHT? YOU AND I WERE TALKING A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY STORY. I’M A MOM OF TWO. MY SON BREASTFED JUST FINE. MY DAUGHTER HAD A PROBLEM LATCHING. AND I FEEL LIKE THERE’S, THERE’S SOMETIMES THIS MOM GUILT WHEN WOMEN AREN’T ABLE TO BREASTFEED. WHY ARE EVENTS LIKE THIS SO IMPORTANT? ABSOLUTELY. EVENTS LIKE THIS SHOW US THAT THEIR SUPPORT, REGARDLESS OF YOUR FEEDING CHOICE, REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENED DURING YOUR JOURNEY, THERE ARE SUPPORT PERSONS OUT THERE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT. MAYBE THE NEXT TIME YOU BREASTFEED, OR WHAT HAPPENED DURING YOUR FIRST TIME AROUND, SECOND TIME AROUND. SO THAT WAY WE CAN HELP YOU FEEL A LITTLE BIT BETTER ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE AND ASSURE YOU YOU DID NOTHING WRONG. SOMETIMES CHALLENGES JUST ARISE. AND AGAIN, YOUR LACTATION CONSULTANT. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU DO TELL MOMS WHEN THEY DO ENCOUNTER THOSE CHALLENGES? ABSOLUTELY. THE BIGGEST THING IS FIND YOUR PEOPLE, FIND YOUR SUPPORT, COMMUNITY SUPPORT IN THIS JOURNEY IS VERY IMPORTANT. CHALLENGES CAN ARISE AND IF YOU HAVE SUPPORT PEOPLE BEHIND YOU, IT MAKES IT A LITTLE BIT EASIER TO GET THROUGH. YEAH. AND SO LET’S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME OF THAT SUPPORT. CRP WICK DOES PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR MOMS WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLE. LET’S TALK MORE ABOUT THAT. ABSOLUTELY. SO FOR PARENTS WHO WANT A LITTLE BIT MORE SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THEIR PREGNANCY JOURNEY AND EVEN THEIR LACTATION JOURNEY, WE HAVE PEER COUNSELORS WHO CAN PROVIDE THAT FOR PARENTS WHO JUST NEED A LITTLE EXTRA SUPPORT. IF BREASTFEEDING CHALLENGES DO ARISE. WE HAVE A TEAM OF LACTATION CONSULTANTS THAT CAN HELP IDENTIFY CHALLENGES AND HELP PARENTS REACH THEIR GOALS. AND SO WE WANT TO GET YOU IN ON THIS CONVERSATION TOO. LIKE WE’RE SITTING HERE LIKE LACTATION, BREASTFEEDING, YOU KNOW, WHAT ROLE DO DADS PLAY IN THIS PROCESS TOO? THEY’RE OBVIOUSLY VERY IMPORTANT, RIGHT? WELL, LIKE EVERYTHING, JUST GENERAL LIFE SHOULD BE SUPPORTIVE, RIGHT? LIKE YOU MENTIONED EARLIER WHEN WE WERE TALKING IS HAVING A SUPPORTIVE PARTNER OR HUSBAND IS EVERYTHING. STUDIES SHOW THAT WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEBODY SUPPORTING YOU IN THIS PROCESS, YOU TEND TO LEAN TOWARDS MORE BREASTFEEDING AND YOU WILL STAY DOING IT LONGER, RIGHT? SO IT’S IMPORTANT THAT THE HUSBAND OR PARTNERS GET INVOLVED BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY WE’RE MORE THAN JUST HOLDING BOTTLES HERE, RIGHT? WE’RE THERE TO REALLY JUST SUPPORT HOWEVER WE CAN. AND AT MINIMUM, JUST VOICE, RIGHT? JUST BE A VOICE AND JUST LOVE ON, YOU KNOW? YEAH, SURE. LET’S TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE OTHER RESOURCES TOO THAT ARE AVAILABLE, PERHAPS EVEN OUTSIDE OF THIS EVENT, PERHAPS, PERHAPS FOR FAMILIES WHO MAYBE CAN’T MAKE IT. YEAH. SO DEFINITELY THE PROGRAM ITSELF IS, IS THAT PART OF THE ORGANIZATION. WE ALSO HAVE OTHER, AS YOU MENTIONED BEFORE, RIGHT? WE HAVE WE WORK IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES, PROVIDE A NUMBER OF SERVICES, ENERGY, HEALTH AND NUTRITION RELATED WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. BUT THAT’S, THAT’S I’LL LET HER SPEAK ON THE ACTUAL PROGRAM ITSELF. YES. WE HAVE INFORMATION ON OUR SCREEN FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING THE EVENT. IT’S COMING UP ON FRIDAY ONCE AGAIN, WHEN, WHERE AND IS THERE A COST? IT IS NOT. IT IS COMPLETELY FREE. SO THIS FRIDAY, MAY 1ST, 26TH ANNUAL BREASTFEEDING CELEBRATION AT HOWARD PARK IN SACRAMENTO FROM 10 A.M. TO 1 P.M.
