Throughout the year, Bakersfield College hosts a variety of events geared toward bringing
\n together students, staff and community members for positive discussion, networking,
\n and interaction. Earlier this week, BC hosted their second installment of Campus Equity
\n Conversations (CEC), a series of events meant to create meaningful dialogue and positive
\n connections. This month\u2019s installment featured an all-student panel as they answered
\n questions around the topic of Building Belonging at BC.<\/p>\n

Gilbert Ayuk, Physics Professor at BC, was the MC for the event which included providing
\n questions for the panelists around the day\u2019s topics. Dr. Stacey Pfluger, Interim President
\n and BC, welcomed everybody to the event. \u201cThank you for taking time and coming to
\n this important conversation,\u201d she said, \u201cbuilding community and building a sense of
\n belonging is absolutely critical to each and every person on this campus \u2013 students
\n and employees alike. So, thank you being here.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a brief introduction video about belonging and inclusion, Mr. Ayuk provided
\n discussion questions for the panelists. The first question was \u201cWhen did you feel
\n like you belonged at BC?\u201d Hunter Moore, current BC student, was the first to answer.
\n \u201cI feel like I belonged here at Bakersfield College over the last few years,\u201d he said,
\n \u201cit kind of went hand in hand with getting involved in many campus organizations,
\n including the student government association.\u201d He also mentioned how he volunteered
\n at the tutoring center, got involved with the Renegade Garden Club and the History
\n Club, and served as Vice President of BCSGA. \u201cIt was those experiences \u2013 getting involved,
\n building that sense of community with students, faculty and advisors that contributed
\n to my sense of belonging here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another BC student, Willow, shared a story of a conversation with a friend that helped
\n them feel like they belonged at BC. \u201cMy friend gave me my inspiration to aspire to
\n do something big,\u201d they said, \u201cand she would just keep pushing me and pushing me \u2013
\n more than I had pushed myself than ever before. Then she told me one day, \u2018I am very
\n proud of you.\u2019 \u00a0It was that affirmation that made a difference for me.\u201d It was that
\n connection with a fellow student that helped Willow pursue their academic goals.<\/p>\n

After some more inspiring stories from the student panelists, the event concluded
\n with a time of networking, and everyone was invited to enjoy some fresh pizza. Thank
\n you to all the student panelists who shared their experiences and perspectives. We
\n hope this event, and future CEC discussions, will help build a sense of belonging
\n for current and future students.<\/p>\n
