FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Saturday, when Fresno State travels to play Boise State, the Milk Can is on the line.<\/p>\n
“Something about this one,” said Bulldog junior defensive lineman Jahzon Jacks. “Just looking at it, I’m ready to go right now.”<\/p>\n
The last player to carry the trophy off the field was running back Malik Sherrod and it followed the game of his career. Back in 2023, he had 255 all-purpose yards against the Broncos, including a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown.<\/p>\n
When interim head coach Tim Skipper wasn’t retained, Sherrod traded his Fresno red for Boise blue but he’s not the first to switch sides. Back in 2021, linebacker Tyson Maeva, a former Bronco team captain, was brought to the Valley by Kalen DeBoer.<\/p>\n
Sherrod played for Fresno State from 2020-2023 but followed his running back coach, James Montgomery, from Fresno to Boise this past offseason.<\/p>\n
“We don’t recruit a lot of transfers,” BSU head coach Spencer Danielson told Action News in July. “We try and recruit the right ones so when Jamo had a relationship with him when he was in the portal, knew him, knew his character, knew who he was – that was a huge advantage in bringing him to the blue.”<\/p>\n
Sherrod’s ex-teammates say they’re excited to match up against him. “We went to practice, we competed every day at practice so let’s do it on the big stage,” said Jacks.<\/p>\n
On Fresno State’s schedule, there’s no stage bigger than their game with the Broncos.<\/p>\n
“We’ve had battles back and forth,” Danielson said. “Last time we played Fresno State, they beat us [37-30].”<\/p>\n
By his standards, it’s been a quiet year for the senior. Through eight games, Sherrod has rushed for 250 yards and two touchdowns.<\/p>\n
The Bulldogs are struggling to find their own run game. In their last game against the Aztecs, the team rushed for just 45 total yards.<\/p>\n
“Believe me, Boise State, they ain’t going to feel sorry for the Bulldogs,” said head coach Matt Entz.<\/p>\n
This week, Sherrod told Bronco Nation News<\/a> that he’s ready to suit up against his former squad.<\/p>\n “It’s all love over there, but with this week coming up, let’s just say the friendships are a little shaky right now,” he said. “I’ve gotten on the phone with a couple of guys from Fresno and the smack talk has started.
