California\u2019s fastest drivers faced a rude awakening as California Highway Patrol officers unleashed a major crackdown<\/a>, handing out 11,767 speeding tickets in a single day. Among them, 200 speed demons were caught flying past 100 mph.<\/p>\n

The California Highway Patrol launched its \u201cmaximum enforcement period\u201d Tuesday morning, sending officers statewide on a mission to hunt down dangerous drivers, according to ABC7<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeeding isn\u2019t just a violation, it\u2019s one of the leading factors in serious and deadly crashes,\u201d the agency warned.<\/p>\n

The crackdown comes after CHP officers issued more than 491,000 speeding tickets last year, while preliminary figures show speeding played a role in more than 110,000 crashes \u2014 leaving over 400 people dead\u00a0<\/a>and roughly 68,000 injured.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeeding continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes<\/a> on California\u2019s roadways,\u201d CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said, warning that higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase danger for everyone on the road.<\/p>\n

Under the Forwarded Actions for Speeding Tickets\u2014or FAST\u2014program, drivers caught going more than 100 mph can have their cases automatically sent to the DMV, where licenses may be suspended or revoked.<\/p>\n
