IRVINE, CA \u2014 An Orange County man in his 80s lost tens of thousands of dollars in an elaborate scam involving a fake call from the Irvine chief of police, KTLA 5 reported. <\/p>\n

The scam started with a single text message sent to the victim.<\/p>\n

“This was definitely a unique case where multiple people worked in concert with one another to make this scam more believable,” Irvine Police Department spokesperson Ziggy Azarcon told KTLA. <\/p>\n

According to the report, the victim spoke to a fake Apple representative, as well as a fake Wells Fargo agent before being patched through to a person who claimed to be the Irvine Chief of Police.<\/p>\n
