IT’S 616 AND PLACER COUNTY 608 IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. KCRA 3’S PEYTON HEADLEE SPOKE WITH SOME SACRAMENTO FLORAL SHOPS NOW GETTING READY FOR MOTHER’S DAY DELIVERIES. PEYTON, HOW ARE THEY DEALING WITH THESE HIGH PRICES? YEAH, WELL, THE FLOWER SHOPS WE SPOKE TO SAID THEY’RE BEING VERY INTENTIONAL WITH THEIR DELIVERIES, MAKING SURE THAT IF THEY’RE GOING TO A CERTAIN AREA, THEY HAVE ALL OF THE FLOWERS FOR THAT LOCATION, SO THEY DON’T HAVE TO GO BACK THERE AGAIN LATER THAT DAY. THEY ARE MAKING SURE THAT THEY DON’T PASS THIS COST ON TO CONSUMERS. FLOWER SHOPS ACROSS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. THERE ARE SUNFLOWERS ARE GETTING READY TO PUT THEIR FOOT TO THE PEDAL. THEY’RE MAKING UP ARRANGEMENTS. MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND IS ONE OF THEIR BUSIEST OF THE YEAR. MOST PEOPLE DON’T CALL UNTIL THURSDAY, FRIDAY. SATURDAY. JIM ELLIS, OWNER OF MIDTOWN SACRAMENTO’S FLORIST, SAYS THEY HAVE TEN TIMES THEIR USUAL VOLUME OF FLOWERS AS THEY PREPARE TO MAKE THEIR DELIVERIES. HE SAYS THEY’RE BEING VERY INTENTIONAL WITH PLANNING, WITH GAS PRICES SURGING. WE’RE TRYING TO MAYBE REGROUP THE ORDERS TOGETHER SO WE’RE NOT MAKING A LOT OF TRIPS TO ONE AREA. THAT HELPS TO LOWER DELIVERY COSTS FOR THEM, SINCE HE SAYS THEY’RE NOT RAISING PRICES TO ACCOUNT FOR GAS. WE CAN’T RAISE OUR PRICES SO HIGH TO REALLY BALANCE WHAT IT’S COSTING US. I THINK IT’S TOO MUCH FOR THE CONSUMER, SO WE’RE HOPING TO GET AS MUCH BUSINESS AS WE CAN AND HOPE THAT’LL BALANCE OFF THE HIGHER PRICES. WE’RE KEEPING ALL OF OUR DELIVERY PRICES THE SAME AS IT WAS. BOTANIC FLOWER SHOP IS ALSO ABSORBING THE COST, EVEN AS SOME OF THE FARMS THEY BUY FLOWERS FROM HAVE ADDED DELIVERY FEES. IT’S A LITTLE ONE, BUT IT’S NOTHING TO WHERE IT’S REALLY IMPACTING OUR PRICES IN STORE, WHICH IS GREAT. KEEPING PRICES LOW, THEY HOPE, WILL HELP KEEP THEIR CUSTOMERS HAPPY. FLOWERS CAN BE EXPENSIVE AND SO WE REALLY TRY TO KEEP THAT IN MIND. AND WE WANT EVERYONE, LIKE I SAID, EVERYONE, TO BE ABLE TO COME IN AND GET FLOWERS. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS ADD WATER AND FLORAL FOOD AND THEY GET A HAPPY EXPERIENCE. THAN THE GROCERY STORES. AND JIM THERE SAID THAT THEIR BUSIEST DAYS ACTUALLY START ON THURSDAY. AND THAT’S LARGELY BECAUSE HE SAYS THIS IS A PROCESS PROCRASTINATOR’S HOLIDAY. A LOT OF PEOPLE GENERALLY WAIT TO ORDER FLOWERS, BUT THEY PLAN FOR THAT, AND THEY WILL HAVE PLENTY REA

Sacramento flower shops plan deliveries carefully as gas prices surge

Rising gas prices across Northern California are prompting Sacramento flower shops to adjust delivery strategies ahead of Mother’s Day to avoid passing costs onto customers.

   Updated: 10:27 PM PDT May 6, 2026

  Editorial Standards ⓘ

Gas prices are climbing across Northern California due to the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz and the increases are affecting businesses that rely on fuel, including floral shops preparing for Mother’s Day deliveries. Flower shops across the region are gearing up for one of their busiest weekends of the year. Jim Relles, owner of Relles Florist in Midtown Sacramento, said they are handling ten times their usual volume of flowers for Mother’s Day. Despite surging gas prices, Relles said his shop is not raising delivery fees. “We’re trying to group the orders together, so we’re not making a lot of trips to one area,” Relles said. “We can’t raise our prices so high to really balance what it’s costing us. It’s too much for the consumer. So, we’re hoping to get as much business as we can and hope that’ll balance off the higher prices.” Botanic Flower Shop in Sacramento is also absorbing the increased costs to keep their delivery prices the same, even as some farms they source flowers from have added delivery fees. “It’s a little one, but it’s nothing to where it’s really impacting our prices in the store, which is great,” Elise Waelder, a florist at Botanic Flower Shop, said. “Flowers can already kind of be expensive. And so, we really try to keep that in mind. And we want everyone to be able to come in and get flowers.”She said they are being a little stricter on where they will deliver to, but that they always offer pickup as well.
