{"id":303934,"date":"2026-05-07T07:33:52","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T07:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/303934\/"},"modified":"2026-05-07T07:33:52","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T07:33:52","slug":"driver-charged-with-manslaughter-for-allegedly-killing-woman-as-he-pulled-out-of-parking-spot-long-beach-post-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/303934\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver charged with manslaughter for allegedly killing woman as he pulled out of parking spot \u2022 Long Beach Post News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Authorities have charged a driver with manslaughter for allegedly running over a 19-year-old nursing student in the parking lot of an East Long Beach shopping center.<\/p>\n<p>Grace Edwards and her mother were walking through the lot outside a Five Below and Trader Joe\u2019s on Bellflower Boulevard near Stearns Street when the driver struck and killed her, according to police and a <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/grace-edwards-parking-lot-killed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fundraiser<\/a> for her family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/grace-edwards96476381-176280566489397-r-169652-w2je2nmf-806610-assqCskv.webp.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/grace-edwards96476381-176280566489397-r-169652-w2je2nmf-806610-assqCskv.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-179474\"  \/><\/a>Grace Edwards. Photo courtesy of GoFundMe.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said the crash happened around 3:55 p.m. on Nov. 2 as the driver was pulling out of a parking spot. Police suspect distracted driving played a role.<\/p>\n<p>In March, police sought a warrant to arrest the suspected driver, Deasean Alphonzia Edwards, who has no apparent relation to Grace Edwards.<\/p>\n<p>He appeared in Long Beach Superior Court on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/06123603\/202b0e75-8ceb-4542-b7a8-d9e832e427d4-008676-bbs4uvb6-560384-M0DvARSs.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/202b0e75-8ceb-4542-b7a8-d9e832e427d4-008676-bbs4uvb6-560384-M0DvARSs-1024x738.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183648\"  \/><\/a>A memorial is maintained for Grace Edwards in a parking lot on Bellflower Boulevard near Stearns Street in Long Beach, Wednesday, May 6, 2026. He was ordered held on $30,000 bail.<\/p>\n<p>Haley and Scott Sousa, friends of the Edwards family, launched a fundraiser a day after her death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrace was a vibrant and carefree 19-year-old girl,\u201d they wrote on the fundraiser. \u201cShe was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, and nursing student.
