In a room thick with end-of-semester fatigue, lingering exhaustion and a general sense of world-weariness, Sharp Pins, Rocket and Snail Mail delivered a night of guitar-driven catharsis that felt loud, electric and unforgettable.

The night’s entertainment began with Sharp Pins, the solo project of Kai Slater, a Chicago-based musician and member of the indie rock band Lifeguard. Dressed in a loose blouse and trousers, with a mop top to boot, Slater cut a striking figure — looking and sounding like an androgynous fifth Beatle. Backed by a band clad in velvet, denim and leather — including a guitarist wearing a beguiling tambourine headpiece — Sharp Pins matched Slater’s vintage, timeless aesthetic, moving between wiry, psychedelic-tinged punk rock and softer melodic ballads with ease. After launching into one guitar solo after another, the band left its half-hour set with a bang: Slater punctuating the finale with a high kick and a jump into the air.

Soon after, second opener Rocket took the stage, immediately shifting the room’s vibe from Sharp Pins’ retro haze into something sharper and more contemporary. Charismatic lead vocalist Alithea Tuttle led the band as it delivered a tight set of hook-driven indie rock, powered by driving guitars and undeniable stage presence. Even with a mix that sometimes buried Tuttle’s belting vocals beneath dense instrumentation, the band still drew an enthusiastic response from the crowd. Its sound landed somewhere between ’90s indie rock, such as The Smashing Pumpkins, and 2010s-era acts such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs — an aesthetic kinship that would carry into the night’s headliner, Snail Mail.

Some 30 minutes later, Lindsey Jordan, aka Snail Mail, emerged in near-total darkness, and the crowd fell into a transfixed stillness as a sparse guitar line and near-spoken vocal filled the room. Soon after, the lights gradually rose as Jordan opened her set with “Tractor Beam,” a single from her latest studio effort, Ricochet. While Snail Mail first broke out with a more guitar- and-guts-forward strain of indie rock, Ricochet finds Jordan shifting into a softer, more ethereal space — one defined less by teenage angst and distortion and more by airy dream-pop production and hazy emotional restraint.

While this sonic recalibration — and the evident personal growth that comes with a shift in genre and sound — has sharpened Snail Mail’s confidence as a performer, it also underscores the emotional weight of her more visceral earlier material. Songs such as “Valentine,” “Glory” and “Heat Wave” landed with particular force, drawing some of the night’s loudest crowd reactions.

More than anything, the contrast pointed to a broader transformation in Jordan herself. In interviews around Ricochet, she has described the record as her least jaded work yet, a kind of hard-won emotional clarity after years defined by intensity, burnout and coming-of-age volatility. That softened edge and renewed perspective lingered heavily in the live performance — where even the older songs felt reframed through a more measured, self-assured lens.

That balance carried into the rest of the set, which moved fluidly. Jordan bounced between newer material and older favorites, peppering the performance with dry humor and a loose, witty rapport with the audience that kept the atmosphere light between heavier emotional swings.

As the set approached its final stretch, the tone gradually softened, giving way to a more intimate closing run of songs. One of the night’s quietest highlights came with “Reverie,” a tender ode to love and humanity that distilled the emotional clarity Jordan had been threading throughout the set. The set then closed with the slow, moody title track “Ricochet.” After a brief exit, Snail Mail returned for an encore with early releases “Thinning” and “Pristine,” ending on a high note that briefly suspended the reality of a rainy drive home and the quiet reset that follows a night of catharsis.

[30
128334,126702,19931,128333,128335,128337,51691,101,103,102,104,106,105,128332,2578,85779,128338,128336,74236
post-304423","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-francisco","tag-alithea-tuttle","tag-glory","tag-heat-wave","tag-kai-slater","tag-lindsey-jordan","tag-ricochet","tag-rocket","tag-san-francisco","tag-san-francisco-headlines","tag-san-francisco-news","tag-sf","tag-sf-headlines","tag-sf-news","tag-sharp-pins","tag-snail-mail","tag-the-beatles","tag-the-regency-ballroom","tag-tractor-beam","tag-valentine
["GET
