{"id":30495,"date":"2025-10-30T17:47:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T17:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/30495\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T17:47:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T17:47:06","slug":"oakland-woman-was-legally-insane-when-she-killed-her-daughter-court-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/30495\/","title":{"rendered":"Oakland woman was legally insane when she killed her daughter, court rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OAKLAND \u2014 A woman has been sentenced to life in a mental hospital after an Alameda County judge affirmed she was insane at the \u201cprecise moment\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2023\/06\/29\/this-is-how-we-say-good-bye-on-facebook-oakland-woman-allegedly-posted-bloody-photo-after-daughters-homicide-and-confessed-to-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">she stabbed her 10-year-old daughter to death<\/a> in their apartment, court records show.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/2023\/06\/09\/oakland-woman-charged-with-murder-for-allegedly-slicing-her-10-year-old-daughters-throat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Rosa Orozco-Suarez<\/a>, 35, was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and Judge Kimberly Colwell sentenced her to a maximum life term for second-degree murder, records show. The sentencing occurred in early 2025 but hasn\u2019t been previously reported.<\/p>\n<p>Police say that on May 22, 2023, Orozco-Surarez posted a video of her daughter, Sophia Lorenzo Orozco, with the caption, \u201cThis is how we say good bye on Facebook,\u201d and \u201csee you on the other side,\u201d authorities say. Then she signed off social media and allegedly stabbed the young girl to death before turning the knife on herself. She was hospitalized with self-inflicted knife wounds after she was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Orozco-Suarez has been transferred to the state hospital system, records show.<\/p>\n<p>After her arrest, neighbors said that Orozco-Suarez appeared increasingly paranoid and unstable in the weeks leading up to the homicide. Some of her family members have blamed her stress on alleged domestic violence by Sophia\u2019s father, who was not present for the homicide.<\/p>\n<p>When a person is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/2023\/09\/20\/in-plea-agreement-hayward-man-found-not-guilty-of-killing-father-by-reason-of-insanity\/?noamp=mobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity<\/a>, it is a legal finding that they killed the victim but either didn\u2019t understand the nature of their act or didn\u2019t understand it was wrong.
