Distracted driving citations rise across California as CHP steps up enforcement

SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI) — Distracted driving remains a major concern on California roads, and officers with the California Highway Patrol say the problem is getting worse.

CHP officers are increasing enforcement and education efforts, urging drivers to put down their phones and follow the state’s hands-free law before someone gets hurt.

In 2025, CHP officers issued more than 111,000 citations statewide for distracted driving, a nearly 20% increase from the year before.

Officers say the danger goes far beyond a ticket. Distracted driving can include texting, scrolling, adjusting music, eating or anything else that takes a driver’s eyes off the road.

CHP says it only takes a split second of distraction to cause a crash.

The agency is also highlighting California’s “no touch” law, which requires drivers to use hands-free devices behind the wheel. Despite that law, officers say they continue to see violations every day on freeways, neighborhood streets and busy roads across San Diego County.

As part of its stepped-up enforcement, CHP is conducting additional patrols and special operations targeting distracted drivers.

Officers are also focusing on younger drivers, who CHP says have some of the highest rates of distraction in deadly crashes.

CHP is encouraging parents to lead by example and talk with teens about safe driving before they get behind the wheel.
