{"id":306019,"date":"2026-05-08T13:56:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T13:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/306019\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T13:56:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T13:56:11","slug":"bay-bridge-dirt-bike-takeover-nets-nearly-2-dozen-arrests-felony-evasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/306019\/","title":{"rendered":"Bay Bridge dirt bike takeover nets nearly 2 dozen arrests, felony evasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/hbgqvghxv4y0i1ij.jpg\" alt=\"More arrests after Bay Bridge takeover\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-4292be72=\"\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">OAKLAND, Calif. &#8211; Oakland police have confirmed at least 23 arrests following a massive illegal sideshow takeover on the Bay Bridge, which brought cars to a standstill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvu.com\/news\/dirt-bike-operation-shuts-down-bay-bridge-hour-before-reopening-60-bikes-impounded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">early Sunday evening for roughly an hour.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>   23 arrests, felony charge <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KTVU\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-871f4c88=\"\">By the numbers:<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">The number of arrests nearly tripled since Monday, when Oakland&#8217;s acting chief of police, James Beere, announced nine arrests on the bridge and the seizure of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvu.com\/news\/dirt-bike-takeover-bay-bridge-was-chaotic-police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">80 illegal dirt bikes and ATVs.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">According to law enforcement, the majority of those detained\u201419 of the 23 suspects\u2014were cited and released on misdemeanor charges. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">However, the Alameda County District Attorney&#8217;s Office on Thursday announced felony charges against Jose Mendoza, 30, who they say was <a href=\"https:\/\/da.alamedacountyca.gov\/district-attorney-ursula-jones-dickson-announces-charges-following-dangerous-driving-incident-on-by-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">involved in the takeover.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Prosecutors allege Mendoza drove &#8220;recklessly&#8221; within the blocked-off section of the bridge at a high speed, while California Highway Patrol officers chased him.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Officers reported that Mendoza drove with willful and wanton disregard for the safety of officers and the public, despite numerous law enforcement personnel being on foot in the immediate area.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">Investigators also allege that Mendoza first slowed down but when officers tried to arrest \u00a0him, he refused commands, tried to get away and then attempted to &#8220;strike&#8221; an officer during the encounter, the DA said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-871f4c88=\"\">He was charged with two counts of felony evasion and one misdemeanor count of battery on a police officer. \u00a0Mendoza was on felony probation at the time, and the DA said she filed a petition to revoke it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1_-bay-bridge-bikes_00.01.50.34.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\">Someone tried to jump in the bay after an illegal takeover of the Bay Bridge.
