The initiative\u00a0will begin this summer\u00a0<\/p>\n

The state of California has teamed up with\u00a0nonprofit\u00a0Baby2Baby\u00a0to provide free diapers across the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The program, which kicks off this summer, will equip families with newborns at participating hospitals with 400 diapers at the time of discharge.\u00a0The first year of the program will focus on hospitals largely serving MediCal\u00a0patients\u00a0in order\u00a0to\u00a0prioritize low-income families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first days at home with a newborn should be focused on the love, connection, and joy of an expanded family, not stress about affording diapers,\u201d\u00a0said Kim Johnson, secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency.\u00a0\u201cThis program helps ensure families can begin that journey with greater stability and peace of mind.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over time, the Golden State Start initiative will scale\u00a0across to\u00a0an increasing number of\u00a0hospitals and birthing centers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDiapers are at the core of our mission at Baby2Baby as a shocking one in two families in this country\u00a0struggles\u00a0to afford them,\u201d\u00a0said Baby2Baby co-CEOs Norah Weinstein and Kelly Sawyer Patricof.\u00a0\u201cWe are incredibly grateful to Governor Newsom for his ongoing commitment to combating diaper needs in California and could not be prouder to partner on this historic initiative that will support moms and babies at their most vulnerable time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

California-based Baby2Baby<\/a> has distributed more than half a billion essential items over the last 15 years to children in homeless shelters, domestic violence programs, foster care,\u00a0hospitals\u00a0and school districts. It serves over a million children across the country, and, notably,\u00a0was\u00a0on the ground making\u00a0Los Angeles wildfire relief efforts within hours of the first fire starting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the organization, diapers cost\u00a0$80 to $100 per month per baby; the average low-income family pays\u00a0nearly\u00a0$1,000\u00a0a year for diapers; and diapers are the fourth highest household expense for families with diaper needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Baby2Baby will enlist its existing partnerships with hospitals, community-based organizations\u00a0and Welcome Baby programs across California to\u00a0helm\u00a0diaper procurement,\u00a0warehousing\u00a0and hospital distribution of the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Golden State Start marks another element of Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s CalRX, which works to make the likes of insulin and naloxone more affordable.\u00a0<\/p>\n
