Redistricting changes from Proposition 50 have left voters in Sacramento’s Tahoe Park neighborhood surprised to find that candidates they had planned to support are no longer on their ballots. The changes, which moved Tahoe Park from District 7 to District 3, have created confusion for residents as they adjust to new district lines less than a month before the June 2 primary election. Campaign signs for candidates not in the new district remain visible throughout the neighborhood, adding to the uncertainty. “It’s kind of a surprise that things have changed,” said Gina Garcia-Smith, a Tahoe Park resident. Garcia-Smith said she was disappointed to learn she could no longer vote for a candidate she had been supporting. “I really think she’s a great candidate,” Garcia-Smith said. “But yeah, it’s kind of a surprise that things have changed.” She added that the shift has caused confusion not just for her but for her neighbors as well. “I’ve talked to my neighbors, and we’re all in the same boat,” Garcia-Smith said. “Just picking out where the district lines are, because my parents are on the other side, and they still are in her district. So it’s kind of an interesting situation where some of us have the lines switched on us and others of us not so much.” And other neighbors are also taking notice.“We’ve seen a lot of people who have signs of people who just are not in this district,” Lillian Ghafari, president of the Tahoe Park Neighborhood Association. The group is working to ensure voters are aware of the changes. “We’ve really been trying to get the word out,” Ghafari said. Ghafari said that the group is sharing information through newsletters and social media, encouraging voters to verify their district and learn which candidates are on their ballots. “Definitely don’t wait till the last minute,” Ghafari said. “Look up your candidates, know what their priorities are, and know who you’re voting for.” Garcia-Smith said she is reevaluating her choices and plans to research the candidates in her new district. “I’m going to do some research and figure out kind of where we stand,” she said. “I’ve kept the sign up, even though I know that she’s not my candidate now, just because I really like her. And I know people from other areas drive through.” Voters who are unsure about their district are encouraged to check their registration and sample ballot as soon as possible. The primary election is scheduled for June 2.
