{"id":31018,"date":"2025-10-31T00:02:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T00:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/31018\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T00:02:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T00:02:06","slug":"construction-project-to-cause-closures-at-torrey-pines-reserve-through-february-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/31018\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction project to cause closures at Torrey Pines reserve through February \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long-anticipated work at the <a href=\"https:\/\/torreypine.org\/#gsc.tab=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve<\/a> will bring closures to the main park road, upper parking lots and most trails for months starting Monday, Nov. 3.<\/p>\n<p>The multi-phase project will upgrade utilities, the restroom \u201ccomfort station\u201d and accessibility, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torreypines.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Torrey Pines Conservancy<\/a>, a nonprofit that works to \u201cpreserve and protect the ecological significance\u201d of the reserve, which occupies about 1,500 acres at the north end of La Jolla. The work is expected to extend through February.<\/p>\n<p>The project doesn\u2019t mean everything will be unavailable during the construction. Torrey Pines State Beach, the south and north beach parking lots\u00a0and the Torrey Pines Extension trails will remain open.<\/p>\n<p>Full access is expected by March 1. Phase 2 is planned to start in August or September.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Murphy of California State Parks said the coming construction \u201cwill provide much-needed water, sewer, electrical and telecommunication line improvements\u201d as well as upgrades such as new parking stalls and disabled-accessible pathways.<\/p>\n<p>Other elements in the project description are repaved sidewalks and installation of benches and water fountains.<\/p>\n<p>The California Coastal Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/07\/10\/coastal-commission-gives-ok-to-restroom-and-septic-system-project-at-torrey-pines-reserve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved the proposal<\/a> July 10, when the timeline for the first phase was between August and February and the period for the second phase was August 2026 to February 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy told the La Jolla Light that those timelines are considered appropriate construction windows to help minimize disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project as a whole required completion of several steps, including the competitive bid process, contract award and issuance of the notice to proceed,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cNow that these steps have been completed, construction is scheduled to begin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A staff report said the construction period will \u201cavoid overlapping with the breeding season of the California gnatcatcher, a special-status species found in the Torrey Pines reserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murphy said project updates will be available across multiple online platforms \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=657\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=657<\/a>, @castateparkssd on Instagram and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/castateparksSD\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">facebook.com\/castateparksSD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The project coincides with the Torrey Pines Conservancy\u2019s 75th anniversary and is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/01\/04\/advocates-of-rarity-torrey-pines-conservancy-celebrates-75-years-in-la-jolla\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a string of upgrades<\/a> that have taken place recently at the reserve. \u2666<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Long-anticipated work at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve will bring closures to the main park road, upper&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":31019,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[28],"tags":[7,930,5184,6804,74,84,76,75],"class_list":{"0":"post-31018","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-diego","8":"tag-california","9":"tag-la-jolla","10":"tag-la-jolla-light","11":"tag-la-jolla-light-news","12":"tag-san-diego","13":"tag-san-diego-county","14":"tag-san-diego-headlines","15":"tag-san-diego-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31018","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=31018"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31018\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/31019"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=31018"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=31018"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=31018"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
