Along the way, the coaster zips past clips from classic No Doubt videos while the Sphere’s sensory capabilities set the seats vibrating along the tracks.

From there, the Sphere does what it does best, surrounding the band in dizzying, high-definition spectacle, while No Doubt matches it with a performance that’s as tight as it is exuberant. Within that well-honed framework, a series of telling, sometimes offbeat details helped define the shows.

Here are five of those:

What day is it?

Stefani is — no doubt — the star of the show. Her energy, voice, movements, connection with the audience and storytelling helped propel the two-hour show at such a clip that the runtime barely registered.

Twice during the first 30 minutes of Friday’s concert, Stefani made reference to it being Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Six songs and one wardrobe change into the show — just after performing “Underneath It All,” Stefani copped to her mistake.

“I know it’s Friday,” she said. “What? I really don’t know what day it is. I just know you’re (show) No. 2.”

Costume changes aplenty

Stefani went through no fewer than six costume changes during each show, many of them a modern take on her street-punk look from the 1990s.

She opened wearing a yellow-and-black checkered jacket over a black corset ensemble that featured a black tie and white collared dickey. Her matching yellow shorts featured hanging straps and buckles that added to the punk aesthetic; a pair of black-and-white Dr. Martens combat boots completed the ensemble.

Stefani also leaned into her career-long affinity for polka dots, a motif central to her personal style since the band’s 1990s breakthrough. One standout ensemble featured a hooded white cape adorned with oversized black dots, worn over a matching corseted mini dress and fishnet stockings.

The motif reached its emotional peak during “Don’t Speak,” as the Sphere’s 16K screen transformed into a sun-drenched Orange County grove complete with a weathered, ivy-clad billboard. Stefani performed the ballad in a crystal-encrusted reimagining of her iconic navy-and-white polka-dot dress, a visual bookend that placed the 2026 residency firmly within the legacy of the band’s 1995 diamond-certified album.

Stefani closed the set in a maximalist mashup of her signature prints, pairing red tartan bondage-style trousers and red patent leather combat boots with a leopard-print crop top and overskirt — a final nod to the band’s punk and ska roots.

In their words

During breaks in the music, video interludes — sort of a living scrapbook — were shown to the audience. The photos, concert scenes, home-movie footage and band interviews presented a multimedia biography of No Doubt. The interludes told the band’s story, from its early days in Anaheim to its transition from the club scene to stadium concerts, to heartbreaks — including when Stefani and bass guitarist Kanal, who dated for years before their split inspired much of ‘Tragic Kingdom,’ broke up — and the hardships the band has endured and the successes it has enjoyed over its 40 years.

In one, drummer Young recalled how the difficult it was for No Doubt to reconcile with the fact that the band had made themselves famous: “We would look at each other and think, ‘What the (expletive) is happening here?” This was not supposed to happen to No Doubt.”

In another, Stefani talked about how the incredible journey the band has been on. But, she said, “originally, the songs were written in a lot of pain.”

Dumont, No Doubt’s guitarist, added his perspective: “When the songs were being written, for “Tragic Kingdom” especially, none of us knew that anyone was going to hear the songs. Observing Gwen, she was telling her story and being so open … because she was telling her story to me and to Tony (Kanal) and to the band and this tight group of friends. She wasn’t telling that story to the world; she didn’t know the world would hear it.”

Suffice it to say, the interludes were more than filler to take up time and allow Stefani to change her wardrobe; they played an integral part in the show’s experience.

Inflation (and success) at work

Among the visuals reflected on the Sphere’s walls before and during the show were dozens of gig posters, telephone pole fliers and handbills advertising No Doubt appearances at various Southern California venues back in the day. One of them — with a picture of the band and black lettering printed on pink paper — stood out. The flier was touting No Doubt’s Sept. 12, 1989, show at the Roxy Theater in Hollywood, and it listed the admission price: $15.

That $15 in 1989 adjusted for inflation would be equal to just under $38 today. That $38 today won’t get you anywhere near the Sphere’s performance hall — the least expensive option for the band’s next show, Wednesday night, runs $237 before taxes. That $38 barely covers the cost of a T-shirt and tax from the merch stand.

On the other hand, the Roxy held 500 people and had no immersive LED ceiling. The Sphere seats 18,600 — 20,000 with standing room — and wraps them in the highest-resolution screen ever built. Thirty-seven years of inflation barely begins to explain the gap.

The price of admission has changed. So has everything else.

Peter Pan they’re not

In the Disney classic, Peter Pan refuses to grow up because he fears losing his wonder — a tale Stefani, Dumont, Kanal and Young know something about, having grown up in the shadow of Disneyland and its nightly Tinker Bell fireworks ritual.

Unlike Peter Pan, though, No Doubt proves you can grow up. The band members, now in their mid- to late 50s, have navigated the real-world challenges of breakups, hiatuses and parenthood. They’re showing their age — receding hairlines, graying hair, wrinkles — but 40 years on, they’re still bringing the house down. Through all of it, they’ve kept the wonder of No Doubt intact.

In their Sphere residency, they aren’t pretending it’s still 1992. They’re embracing the now, showing that while Peter Pan is forever stuck in Neverland, No Doubt has successfully made the journey from the garage to the grandest stage on earth — trading the shadows of Disneyland for the spotlight of the Las Vegas Strip.

No Doubt continues its “Live at Sphere” residency today, Friday and Saturday, plus May 21, 23, 24, 27, 29 and 30, June 3, 5, 6, 10, 12 and 13.
