LA JOLLA, Calif. \u2014 UC San Diego will compete at the Big West Track & Field Championships in Long Beach, at Jack Rose Track on Friday and Saturday, May 15-16. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, while track events are set for 12:45 p.m. on Friday and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Tritons will have 63 athletes representing UC San Diego at the championship meet. This marks UC San Diego’s second appearance at the Big West Championships. Last year, the Tritons claimed five event championships, with the men’s team finishing seventh overall and the women’s team placing fifth.<\/p>\n
BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS INFO THE INDOOR SEASON New School Records THE OUTDOOR SEASON To date, the Tritons have won 37 events and set seven school records during the outdoor season.<\/p>\n New School Records 2026 POSTSEASON UC San Diego is postseason eligible for the second time in Division I. At last year’s Big West Championships, the Triton women finished fifth, while the men took seventh.<\/p>\n The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin with the First Round at two regional locations, west and east. The West First Round is May 27-30 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The top 48 athletes in each event from the west region will qualify for that meet, with the top 12 moving on to the final round of the National Championships June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.<\/p>\n DEFENDING CHAMPS The Tritons also won last year’s Big West title in the women’s 4x400m relay.\u00a0Jordyn Thomas<\/a>\u00a0returns from last year’s relay squad.<\/p>\n BACK FOR MORE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST KIM GRAHAM-MILLER AT THE HELM A 1993 graduate of Clemson University, she was a decorated athlete for the Tigers. The team captain was a three-time ACC Performer of the Year \u2013 the only woman to capture that honor three times. She was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1999.<\/p>\n After graduating from Clemson, Graham-Miller took part in the 1995 Indoor and Outdoor World Championships, where she was a semifinalist in the 400-meter. Competing for the United States in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, she was a 400-meter semifinalist before capturing a gold medal as part of the 4×400 meter relay team.<\/p>\n Coach Graham-Miller is a member of the Clemson Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Clemson Ring of Honor in the summer of 2024. \nThe 2026 Big West Track & Field Championships will be May 15-16 on the campus of Long Beach State. The heptathlon and decathlon will be contested one week earlier, May 8-9, on the campus of UC Irvine.<\/p>\n
\nAt last year’s Big West Track & Field Championships, the Tritons saw two scholar-athletes capture individual championships.\u00a0Tamara Aimufia<\/a>\u00a0won the women’s long jump event, and\u00a0Feyi Olukanni<\/a>\u00a0won the women’s shot put event. Both return for the Tritons this season.<\/p>\n
\nThe Tritons qualified six scholar-athletes for the First Round of the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Five of those athletes are back this season:

\nUC San Diego Director of Athletics\u00a0Earl W. Edwards<\/a>\u00a0announced the hiring of former Olympic gold medal-winner\u00a0Kim Graham-Miller<\/a>\u00a0as the new head track & field coach of the Tritons on July 11, 2022. She took over UC San Diego’s men’s and women’s programs after serving as an assistant coach at Sacramento State since 2014, working with relay teams and sprints and hurdles. During her time in Sacramento, she helped coach the Hornets to six Big Sky Conference titles.<\/p>\n
\nThe Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego’s close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.<\/p>\n

\nAfter two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program has begun a new era as a member of The Big West in NCAA Division I. The 24-sport Tritons earned 30 team and nearly 150 individual national championships during its time in Divisions II and III and helped guide 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors. A total of 83 Tritons have earned Academic All-America honors, while 39 have garnered prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships. UC San Diego scholar-athletes exemplify the academic ideals of one of the world’s preeminent institutions, graduating at an average rate of 90 percent, the highest rate among public institutions in NCAA Division I or II.
