In this semester\u2019s issue, you<br \/>\n                        will find:<\/p>\n<p>                     <a id=\"librarian-retirement\">Librarian Retirement<\/a><\/p>\n<p>                     Joey Merritt, OER Librarian &amp; Instructional Designer<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/library-newsletter-joey-merritt-May-2026.jpg\" alt=\"adult female with gray hair smiling\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\"\/>As the spring semester draws to a close, we are preparing for a bittersweet transition<br \/>\n                           within our library team. After three years of dedicated service and advocacy, our<br \/>\n                           current OER librarian is retiring to embark on a new chapter beyond academia.<\/p>\n<p>We will greatly miss her expertise and energy, especially the genuine warmth and dedication<br \/>\n                           she brought to the library team and the faculty she supported so tirelessly.<\/p>\n<p>Please join us in wishing our retiring colleague the very best in her next adventure!<\/p>\n<p>                     <a id=\"fresh-face-library\">Fresh Faces at the Library<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve got some new librarians who are eager to serve BC students on all of our campuses.<br \/>\n                        Stop by and say hello to them next time you\u2019re in the library!<\/p>\n<p>                     Rachelle Ehteshami &#8211; OER Librarian<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/library-newsletter-rachelle-ehteshami-May-2026.jpg\" alt=\"adult female wearing glasses\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\"\/>Rachelle Ehteshami will be stepping into the role previously held by Joey, carrying<br \/>\n                        forward the vital work of expanding OER initiatives and faculty support across our<br \/>\n                        campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Rachelle is a familiar face at BC, having been with the college since 2024. A proud<br \/>\n                        alumna of both Bakersfield College and California State University, Bakersfield, she<br \/>\n                        earned her MLIS and a certificate in Strategic Management of Digital Assets and Services<br \/>\n                        from San Jose State University.<\/p>\n<p>Rachelle is deeply committed to the mission of open education, stating:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am passionate about supporting student learning and advocating for equitable access<br \/>\n                           in education. As the OER librarian, I will have the rewarding opportunity to advocate<br \/>\n                           for the use of open educational resources that improve student access and strengthen<br \/>\n                           learning in their courses. I will also have the exciting opportunity to build partnerships<br \/>\n                           with faculty to support collaboration in finding open educational resources for their<br \/>\n                           courses and increase OER utilization in their instruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Please join us in giving Rachelle a warm welcome as she leads our efforts toward becoming<br \/>\n                        an increasingly OER-focused campus!<\/p>\n<p>                     Jasmin LoBasso &#8211; Adjunct Reference Librarian<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/library-newsletter-jasmin-lobasso-May-2026.png\" alt=\"woman wearing a maroon blouse\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\"\/>Jasmin LoBasso is an Adjunct Reference Librarian and proud alumna of Bakersfield College.<br \/>\n                           She earned her Bachelor of History with a minor in Communications and a Master of<br \/>\n                           Business Administration locally from CSUB. She later earned a Master of Library and<br \/>\n                           Information Science from San Jose State University. Her professional experience includes<br \/>\n                           public service roles in public libraries, recreation management, community relations<br \/>\n                           and marketing within local government. Her professional interests include outreach,<br \/>\n                           connection development and instruction. Beyond work, she is an avid reader, board-game<br \/>\n                           collector, travel enthusiast and advocate for the arts.<\/p>\n<p>                     <a id=\"rural-campus-spotlights\">Rural Campus Spotlights<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we approach the end of another school year, our rural libraries have much to celebrate.<br \/>\n                        Each site has experienced meaningful growth \u2014 more librarian coverage, more orientations,<br \/>\n                        more programming and more books added to the shelves. Arvin saw a notable expansion<br \/>\n                        this year with additional librarian hours. A librarian is now on site every Friday<br \/>\n                        from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., increasing support for students and faculty. Delano broadened<br \/>\n                        its programming with the launch of a new Chess Club, which has already begun drawing<br \/>\n                        enthusiastic participation. Across all three locations \u2014 Delano Campus, Arvin Educational<br \/>\n                        Center and BC Southwest \u2014 staff have been steadily strengthening their collections<br \/>\n                        to better serve our students. To make browsing easier, we\u2019ve also created new Library<br \/>\n                        Guides highlighting two of our rural sites:<\/p>\n<p>All rural library locations will remain open during the summer. True Stories: Moments that Mattered<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/library-newsletter-Live-Library_Elisabeth-Sundby-May-2026.jpg\" alt=\"'Storytelling - Thursday, April 16, 2026; 11:30AM-1:00PM; Delano Campus Library; Stories, Food, Comunity&quot;\" width=\"322\" height=\"417\"\/>The Delano Campus Library recently hosted its first Live from the Library storytelling<br \/>\n                           event, bringing students, faculty, and staff together for shared stories, food and<br \/>\n                           connection. Inspired by the format of The Moth story slams, seven storytellers, including<br \/>\n                           four students, two faculty members, and one campus administrator took the mic to share<br \/>\n                           short, personal, true stories centered on the theme \u201cMoments that Mattered.\u201d The stories<br \/>\n                           ranged from heartfelt to humorous, and the audience responded with attention, laughter<br \/>\n                           and a great deal of support. We\u2019re looking forward to continuing Live from the Library<br \/>\n                           this fall, so stay tuned for upcoming storytelling events at the Delano Library.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                     Shafter Library &amp; Learning Center<\/p>\n<p>The Shafter Library and Learning Center (SLLC), in partnership with the Independent<br \/>\n                        Living Center of Kern County, hosted a community storytime as part of the Shafter<br \/>\n                        Colours Festival on Saturday, February 27th. The storytime, conducted in spoken English<br \/>\n                        and Spanish as well as American Sign Language (ASL), celebrated the diversity in the<br \/>\n                        Shafter Library\u2019s collection and Shafter community at large. In ASL and spoken English,<br \/>\n                        Bakersfield College faculty members Martha Mendez, Jerome Lagaya, and Ariel Dyer read<br \/>\n                        the picture book Monster Hands by Jonaz McMillan and Karen Kane, a story about two<br \/>\n                        best friends who use ASL to scare away the monster under the bed.<\/p>\n<p>                     Historic BC Building Blueprints Donated to BC Southwest Library<\/p>\n<p>The BC Southwest Library is pleased to announce the addition of three newly donated<br \/>\n                        architectural blueprints to our local history collection. Gifted to us by the BC Archives,<br \/>\n                        these framed originals date back to 1953 and depict proposed buildings for the Panorama<br \/>\n                        Campus.<\/p>\n<p>The set includes plans for:<\/p>\n<p>                        the Theater and Music Building<\/p>\n<p>                        the Agricultural Building<\/p>\n<p>                        the Administration and Business Building<\/p>\n<p>These blueprints were shared with our library in recognition of the strong architectural<br \/>\n                        program on our campus and will serve as valuable historical and educational resources.<br \/>\n                        They are now available for viewing during regular library hours.<\/p>\n<p>                     <a id=\"cal-fresh-workshop\">2026 Healthy Eating &amp; Cal Fresh Workshop<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/library-newsletter-May-2026-H.jpg\" alt=\"three females standing in a classroom\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This March, the library was proud to host the Healthy Eating and CalFresh Workshop,<br \/>\n                        a collaborative event focused on nutrition and food security. In partnership with<br \/>\n                        Heather Baeza (Program Coordinator from Human Services) and Alexis Moran and Alexandra<br \/>\n                        Apatiga (from the Renegade Nexus and Basic Needs Center), the event provided students<br \/>\n                        with essential information on CalFresh benefits and practical strategies for maintaining<br \/>\n                        healthy eating habits during high-stress periods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                     <a id=\"library-tik-tok\">Follow the BC Library&#8217;s New TikTok Account!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This semester, the BC Librarians launched a new TikTok account and everyone is invited<br \/>\n                        to follow at @bc_library.
