Oakland’s last remaining Gap store is set to close this summer.<\/p>\n
Gap had been a fixture of Lakeshore Avenue, a lively retail corridor north of Lake Merritt, for the last 26 years.<\/p>\n
It’s yet another loss of a major retailer for Oakland in the wake of the pandemic. Target<\/a> and Sweet July, a home goods store<\/a> owned by Steph Curry’s wife Ayesha Curry, closed in Oakland’s Uptown, citing concerns around safety and theft. Lululemon<\/a> also closed in 2025.<\/p>\n A Gap spokesperson confirmed the store is closing, and said the company would help employees explore opportunities at other nearby stores. The spokesperson did not respond to questions about why it decided to close the Lakeshore Avenue store.<\/p>\n The 10,000 square-foot retail space is currently for lease or sale by brokerage firm CBRE, according to SF Gate<\/a>, which reported the closure Tuesday.<\/p>\n The Gap’s closure comes despite rising sales<\/a> at San Francisco-based Gap Inc., which also owns Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. Still, Gap has closed hundreds of stores throughout the country in recent years, including in its flagship store<\/a> near Union Square, as well as two other locations in Embarcadero Center and the Stonestown Galleria.<\/p>\n In the East Bay, three lower-priced Gap Factory outlets remain in San Leandro, Livermore and Concord.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Gap co-founder Doris Fisher – who helped Gap grow from a single store in San Francisco’s Ingleside neighborhood into an international brand –\u00a0died at the age of 94.<\/p>\n But perhaps the better-known Fisher among Oaklanders is her son, John Fisher, owner of the Athletics. The Major League Baseball team played its last season in Oakland in 2024 and is in the process of moving to Las Vegas for the 2028 season<\/a>.
