Dahna Stowe\u2019s colleagues describe her\u00a0decision to retire\u00a0early\u00a0from teaching\u00a0at CSU Bakerfield\u00a0(CSUB)\u00a0as selfless. The CFA Bakersfield\u00a0Council for Racial and Social Justice Representative and CSUB\u00a0lecturer\u00a0is\u00a0retiring to save the jobs\u00a0of not just one, but two faculty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just really the right thing to do,\u201d Stowe said.\u00a0\u201cI know\u00a0I can leave and be okay and two human beings can keep their jobs, even if\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just for a little while.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Stowe has taught in the Sociology Department since 2013, after she earned her\u00a0bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees\u00a0from\u00a0CSUB.\u00a0She joined CFA right away\u00a0and was the longtime lecturer representative prior to her current role.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Joining CFA as a member was\u00a0a no-brainer\u00a0for Stowe. Being involved in CFA helps keep her grounded and focused on the broader mission of the university. Education is the great equalizer, Stowe said, and knowledge is the one thing nobody can ever take away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI would have to have amnesia to forget that there\u2019s really a bigger call to all of\u00a0this,\u201d Stowe said.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0not just about going to work, teaching some classes, grading some papers, and getting a paycheck. This really is about dismantling systems of oppression.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tracey Salisbury, CFA AVP of Chapter Presidents, South, and CSU Bakersfield professor,\u00a0said CFA Bakersfield and the campus\u00a0as a whole will\u00a0suffer a great\u00a0loss with Stowe\u2019s retirement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is an amazing educator who\u2019s really dedicated to her students and to her discipline,\u201d Salisbury said. \u201cShe\u2019s a glue person;\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0a person that you need on your team to bring people together in a solid, functional way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Salisbury, who is close friends with Stowe, added that Stowe is smart,\u00a0collaborative,\u00a0loving,\u00a0giving,\u00a0and willing to\u00a0do\u00a0whatever\u00a0it\u00a0takes\u00a0to\u00a0get\u00a0the\u00a0work\u00a0done.\u00a0Stowe also makes sure whatever constituency she\u00a0represents\u00a0is truly represented, Salisbury said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
CFA members should also know, Salisbury said, that\u00a0Stowe\u00a0makes the best greens and mac and cheese. Stowe is a great mom and\u00a0grandma, too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dirk Horn, CFA Bakerfield lecturer representative and CSUB lecturer,\u00a0also\u00a0spoke highly of Stowe. He said Stowe is always the first to volunteer\u00a0and\u00a0speaks truth to power on a regular basis. She holds administration accountable so much that\u00a0some\u00a0of\u00a0his favorite memories of her\u00a0are\u00a0of Stowe holding their feet to the fire.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cShe calls\u00a0out the president at open forums on a constant basis to point to where he calls on her first because\u00a0he knows\u00a0she\u2019s going to have something to say,\u201d Horn said. \u201cSo, watching him squirm is nice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
But Stowe is not going to stop giving to CFA or the university.\u00a0After her retirement, she will continue serving on the CFA Bargaining Team and\u00a0personally donating to the CSUB.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Horn said the fact that Stowe will be representing CSUB on the bargaining team shows her dedication to\u00a0faculty and students.\u00a0She will still be advocating and fighting for us, Horn said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
