{"id":31696,"date":"2025-10-31T09:59:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T09:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/31696\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T09:59:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T09:59:11","slug":"universal-music-group-settles-with-ai-music-startup-udio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/31696\/","title":{"rendered":"Universal Music Group settles with AI music startup Udio"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Universal Music Group said Wednesday it has reached licensing agreements with <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-06-24\/riaa-suno-udio-lawsuit-ai-copyright-songs-music\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence music startup Udio<\/a>, settling a lawsuit that had accused Udio of using copyrighted music to train its AI.<\/p>\n<p> Users create music using Udio\u2019s AI, which can compose original songs \u2014 including voices and instruments \u2014 from text prompts.<\/p>\n<p>Udio has agreed with UMG to launch a new platform next year that is only trained on \u201cauthorized and licensed music,\u201d and will let users customize, stream and share music. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new agreements with Udio demonstrate our commitment to do what\u2019s right by our artists and songwriters, whether that means embracing new technologies, developing new business models, diversifying revenue streams or beyond,\u201d Lucian Grainge, UMG\u2019s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>Udio declined to disclose the financial terms of the settlement and licensing agreements. UMG did not immediately return a request for comment on the terms. <\/p>\n<p>Artificial intelligence has brought <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2025-01-24\/ai-beatles-grammys-record-of-the-year-now-and-then-giles-martin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new opportunities<\/a> as well as challenges to the entertainment industry, as AI startups have been training their models on information on the internet, which entertainment companies say infringes on their copyrighted work.<\/p>\n<p>In the music industry, music businesses have accused New York City-based Udio and other AI music startups of training on copyrighted music to generate new songs that are based on popular hits without compensation or permission.<\/p>\n<p>UMG, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and other music businesses <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-06-24\/riaa-suno-udio-lawsuit-ai-copyright-songs-music\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sued Udio last year<\/a>. In the lawsuit, Udio was accused of using hits like The Temptations\u2019 \u201cMy Girl,\u201d to create a similar melody called \u201cSunshine Melody.\u201d UMG owns the copyright to \u201cMy Girl.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA comparison of one section of the Udio-generated file and \u2018My Girl\u2019 reflects a number of similarities, including a very similar melody, the same chords, and very similar backing vocals,\u201d according to the lawsuit. \u201cThese similarities are further reflected in the side-by-side transcriptions of the musical scores for the Udio file and the original recording.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Udio said on its website <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-06-24\/riaa-suno-udio-lawsuit-ai-copyright-songs-music\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the time<\/a> that it stands by its technology and that its AI model learns from examples, similar to how students listen to music and study scores. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal of model training is to develop an understanding of musical ideas \u2014 the basic building blocks of musical expression that are owned by no one,\u201d Udio had said in a statement. \u201cWe are completely uninterested in reproducing content in our training set.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Udio\u2019s CEO and co-founder, Andrew Sanchez, said he was thrilled at the opportunity to work with UMG \u201cto redefine how AI empowers artists and fans.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The collaboration is the first music licensing agreement that Udio has reached with a major music label. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis moment brings to life everything we\u2019ve been building toward \u2014 uniting AI and the music industry in a way that truly champions artists,\u201d Sanchez said in a statement. \u201cTogether, we\u2019re building the technological and business landscape that will fundamentally expand what\u2019s possible in music creation and engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Udio said that artists can opt in to the new platform and will be compensated, but declined to go into the specifics or the artists involved. <\/p>\n<p>Udio, launched in 2024, was co-founded by former Google DeepMind employees. Udio\u2019s backers include music artist <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/will.i.am\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will.i.am<\/a>, Instagram co-founder and Anthropic\u2019s chief product officer Mike Krieger and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.<\/p>\n<p>Udio said millions of people have used Udio since it launched in 2024. Users can access the platform through its app or website.
