On Friday morning, California Attorney General Rob Bonta revealed the results of a new report<\/a> on conditions inside immigration detention facilities, which he described as \u201ccruel, inhumane, and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bonta said the California Department of Justice report<\/a> was compiled by visiting seven detention centers operating in California in 2025 pursuant to contracts with ICE, including the recently-opened California City Detention Facility.<\/p>\n

Adelanto ICE Processing Center \u2013 operated by The GEO Group, Inc. in Adelanto<\/p>\n

Desert View Annex \u2013 operated by GEO Group in Adelanto<\/p>\n

Golden State Annex \u2013 operated by GEO Group in McFarland<\/p>\n

Mesa Verde ICE Processing Facility \u2013 operated by GEO Group in Bakersfield<\/p>\n

Imperial Regional Detention Facility \u2013 operated by Management & Training Corporation in Calexico<\/p>\n

Otay Mesa Detention Center \u2013 operated by CoreCivic in San Diego<\/p>\n

California City Detention Facility \u2013 operated by CoreCivic in California City<\/p>\n

* While finalizing the report, the DOJ says it became aware that an eighth facility, Central Valley Annex, began to receive ICE detainees in April 2026.<\/p>\n

Staff members and nearly 200 detainees were interviewed.<\/p>\n

The report found a 162 percent surge in the number of detainees since the previous report in 2024. It also found many detainees lacked enough food, proper clothing and had poor access to clean drinking water and medical care.<\/p>\n

There were six deaths of detainees between Sept. 2025 and March 2026, according to the report.<\/p>\n

The biggest takeaway from the report, Bonta says, is that conditions are getting worse, and he said they were already substandard.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been driven, in large part, by the Trump administration\u2019s aggressive and inhumane mass deportation campaign, including its refusal to release detainees on bond, so we have more detainees in the facilities and we\u2019re seeing all sorts of unacceptable, cruel and inhumane conditions as a result,\u201d Bonta said.<\/p>\n

This is the fifth report on detention centers by the California Department of Justice.<\/p>\n

KTLA has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for a statement on the report but has not yet received a response as of Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
