{"id":319577,"date":"2026-05-17T03:06:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T03:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/319577\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T03:06:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T03:06:14","slug":"captain-celebrini-scores-first-two-goals-at-2026-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/319577\/","title":{"rendered":"Captain Celebrini Scores First Two Goals At 2026 Worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>San Jose Sharks superstar <a href=\"https:\/\/sharkshockeydigest.com\/tag\/macklin-celebrini\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Macklin Celebrini<\/a> scored his first two goals as the captain of Team Canada at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sharkshockeydigest.com\/tag\/2026-iihf-world-championship\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3171\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 IIHF World Championship<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrini was named captain with no question, but that changed when <a href=\"https:\/\/sharkshockeydigest.com\/tag\/sidney-crosby\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"2541\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sidney Crosby<\/a> joined <a href=\"https:\/\/sharkshockeydigest.com\/tag\/team-canada\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"51\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Team Canada<\/a> just days before the start of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7280159\/2026\/05\/14\/macklin-celebrini-sidney-crosby-captain-canada\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=twhq&amp;smid=url-share-ta&amp;source=twitterhq&amp;unlocked_article_code=1.iVA.mmOL.ds3hwfCvz1et\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">The Athletic<\/a>, Crosby didn\u2019t seem too worried about the process of determining whether he would be the captain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, we\u2019ll figure it out,\u201d Crosby said. \u201cThat\u2019s not something that we\u2019ll need to spend much time on. I\u2019m really happy to be here. (Celebrini has) had an unbelievable year. He looks amazing out here. I can see why he got selected. He\u2019s got so many great leadership qualities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Multiple reports say the players of the Canadian roster were the ones who had the final say. Crosby joined the leadership group as an assistant, but Celebrini remained the captain. The San Jose Sharks centerman is the second-youngest player on the roster at 19 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Canada defeated Team Sweden 5-3 in their opener, and Celebrini didn\u2019t record a point. On Saturday, Celebrini led Canada to a 6-0 victory over Italy. The Sharks center scored twice, and both were beauties.<\/p>\n<p>After taking an incredible feed from <a href=\"https:\/\/sharkshockeydigest.com\/tag\/philadelphia-flyers\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"720\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Flyers<\/a> phenom Porter Martone, the San Jose Sharks star blasted a one-timer short side, giving Canada a 3-0 lead in the first period.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t to be outdone, as Celebrini scored another world-class goal with a one-timed backhand shot from just above the crease. Crosby would start the play by winning a battle in the corner, and the puck found its way to Celebrini via Dylan Cozens.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrini would also add an assist.
