CBS Pittsburgh<\/a> and said that he didn’t even remember falling down when the fentanyl kicked in. He said he helped destroy narcotics in his department’s evidence room before changing his clothes and getting into his patrol car with his partner.<\/p>\nRoughly 20 minutes later, everything went black, the officer remembered. His partner said that the officer suddenly lost consciousness, and he had to administer Narcan twice while waiting for paramedics to arrive. <\/p>\n
The officer said he next remembered waking up in a hospital with no knowledge of what had happened. When he told doctors that he was destroying drugs hours earlier, the story became clear.<\/p>\n
Although the officer was investigated for potentially taking the drugs intentionally, Beaver County District Attorney Nate Bible said that nobody at the department thought that the incident was intentional. This was, in part, because the victim was the department’s evidence custodian, meaning he regularly handled and destroyed narcotics that had been confiscated as evidence.<\/p>\n
Despite reportedly wearing gloves, the officer still managed to come into contact with fentanyl, Bible said.<\/p>\n
“Ultimately, when we found out who the officer was, there wasn’t any of us that thought this guy has a drug problem,” Bible said. “I think this situation shows that such a very, very small amount can be near fatal.”<\/p>\n
Although the officer was not under suspicion of acting inappropriately, the department said it was reviewing and adjusting its safety policies to prevent future incidents.<\/p>\n
The officer returned to work shortly after leaving the hospital, and he told the outlet he was happy to be alive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ALIQUIPPA, Pa.
