It’s hard to believe how productive Cutter Gauthier was for the Anaheim Ducks in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs considering what he was playing through.

Gauthier broke both his L1 and L2 vertebrae on March 30 in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, he confirmed in his end-of-season interview earlier this week, but didn’t miss a single contest in the postseason.

Not only that, he led the Ducks in scoring, amassing 12 points in 12 games as Anaheim was defeated by the Vegas Golden Knights in six games in Round 2.

It was a warrior mentality for the 22-year-old, who was one of Anaheim’s best players on a game-by-game basis this spring.

The fifth overall selection in the 2022 NHL Draft also enjoyed a breakout campaign in the regular season, amassing 41 goals and 69 points in 76 games. By all accounts, he projects as a future superstar for the franchise.

Gauthier was traded to the Ducks after being drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers, in return for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

That looks like an absolute steal of a trade for general manager Pat Verbeek and the front office.

Before breaking into the NHL, Gauthier played two seasons at Boston College, producing at above a point-per-game pace in both of them. He was also terrific for the United States at the World Junior Hockey Championship, helping the country win back-to-back gold medals in 2024 and 2025.

He was a key piece of the Ducks’ attack in 2025-26, and a catalyst of one of the franchise’s best seasons in a decade.

Anaheim advanced to the dance for the first time since 2017-18 before upsetting the Edmonton Oilers — who had been to two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals — in Round 1.

Although the campaign ended in disappointment against a seasoned Golden Knights club, it was a huge step forward for the franchise.

The Ducks are flush with young talent, and this trip to the playoffs looks like it will be the beginning of serious contention in Southern California.
