published on May 18, 2026 – 3:14 PM The first West Nile virus (WNV) positive dead bird has been identified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the first virus detection in Fresno County this year.

The announcement, which was shared with the Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH), was issued on Friday, comes more than a month sooner than the first case was detected in 2025.

West Nile is endemic to the region, the department said, with mid-to-late-May being one of the most common months for the virus to begin appearing. Warmer than normal temperatures in April may have contributed to this year’s early detection.

Health officials urge Valley residents to be vigilant in reporting dead birds or standing water — a common breeding ground for mosquitoes.

“The WNV positive dead bird found in Fresno County is an indicator that the virus is active in our community,” said FCDPH Health Officer Dr. Trinidad Solis. “Residents should take every precaution to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites.”

The department recommends residents practice the “Three Ds” to protect against mosquito bites and WNV, focusing on deterrence, timing and the elimination of standing water.

– Deter — Apply insect repellent including DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 to deter mosquitoes. Children under the age of three should not use oil of lemon eucalyptus.

– Dawn and Dusk — Dawn and dusk are the two most common times for mosquito activity. The department urges residents to wear proper clothing and repellent if outside during these times.

– Drain — The department encourages the draining of standing water, which acts as a common breeding ground for mosquitoes and reports standing water sources, such as swimming pools, that are not being appropriately maintained.

Valley residents are encouraged to report dead birds to the California West Nile website, or by calling 1-877-WNV-BIRD (968-2473). Residents can find their local mosquito abatement district at www.fresnocountymosquito.org.

A Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito.
