Bay Area rapper Mistah F.A.B.<\/a> is mourning a man he described as a lifelong friend after a suspected speeding driver crashed into people outside an East Oakland store over the weekend, killing three<\/a> and injuring five others.<\/p>\n

In an Instagram post<\/a>, the 44-year-old Oakland rapper, whose real name is Stanley Cox, remembered Robert Dixon, known as “Uncle Frog,” as someone he had known since he was 13.<\/p>\n

Cox wrote that Dixon was one of his mother’s friends from “Cadillac Club,” the Tuesday classic car meetups held at his mother’s community space, and that the two spoke almost every day.<\/p>\n

“I’m gon miss the slicking, conning, catting, lying and most of all the pranks and jokes,” Cox wrote Monday, May 18. “UNCLE FROG I LOVE AND IM GLAD WE ALWAYS TOLD EACH OTHER DAT DAILY!!!!!!!!”<\/p>\n

The Alameda County coroner’s bureau had not officially identified the three people killed as of Monday, according to authorities. A witness interviewed by ABC7<\/a> identified one of the victims as James Robert Dixon Jr., known in the neighborhood as “OG Frog.”<\/p>\n

James Baldwin, who said Dixon was his uncle, described him as a fixture on the block where he died.<\/p>\n

“He was a legend,” Baldwin told the station.<\/p>\n

James Robert Dixon Jr. had recently been involved with the Frog and Frog podcast, a small Oakland-based YouTube show that featured local figures including V-White of the Delinquents and, in one recent episode, Mistah F.A.B.<\/p>\n

For Cox, the tribute lands in the middle of an especially hard stretch.<\/p>\n

In January, his Dope Era clothing store<\/a> in downtown Oakland was destroyed in a three-alarm fire, and in July 2024, he publicly mourned his brother, Oakland activist Kenzie Smith<\/a>, as well as rapper Tan DaGod<\/a>, who was fatally shot outside a beauty supply store event.<\/p>\n

Police said Saturday’s crash happened just before 11:15 p.m. near 85th Avenue and International Boulevard, by East Bay Market Liquor.<\/p>\n

According to authorities, a 17-year-old Oakland resident was driving recklessly at more than 50 mph before striking parked vehicles, going onto the sidewalk and hitting a group of people outside the store.<\/p>\n

Oakland Police Chief James Beere said Monday that the driver tried to flee but was restrained by bystanders<\/a> until officers arrived. Police have not identified the teen because he is a minor.<\/p>\n

Investigators are seeking toxicology information and have not ruled out whether the crash was intentional, though Beere said reckless driving appeared to be a factor.<\/p>\n

Mayor Barbara Lee said Oakland was mourning the victims and praised residents who intervened after the crash.<\/p>\n

“Our hearts are with the victims, their families, loved ones, and all of those impacted,” Lee said in a statement.<\/p>\n
