An increase in water allocation has Westlands Water District seeking additional supplies, saying the boost falls short of growers\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Reclamation announced it would increase allocations for south-of-Delta water users \u2014 including Westlands \u2014 from 20 percent to 25 percent.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes as federal hydrologists say the Sierra snowpack dwindled because of unusually early heat.<\/p>\n

Acting Regional Director Adam Nickels said in a statement that \u201ccareful coordination\u201d helped capture spring runoff conditions.<\/p>\n

He said President Donald Trump\u2019s executive orders issued in 2025 helped make the allocation increase possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the Sierra snowpack has for the most part dissipated earlier than usual due to a warm spring, current reservoir storage and operational conditions support this incremental increase while maintaining prudent management of the (Central Valley Project) system,\u201d Nickels said.<\/p>\n

Allocation \u2018Falls Short\u2019 of Growers\u2019 Needs: Febbo<\/p>\n

Though California\u2019s major reservoirs remain at or above average storage levels for this time of year, water uncertainty looms as the Sierra Nevada snowpack declines, according to the Bureau of Reclamation.<\/p>\n

As of May 18, storage levels at all major reservoirs exceed their 15-year averages, with Oroville and Shasta dams at 123 percent and 112 percent of average, respectively, according to Reclamation data.<\/p>\n

Millerton Lake is at 136 percent of its 15-year average.<\/p>\n

In a news release Tuesday, Westlands General Manager Allison Febbo said the Central Valley Project \u2014 which connects the state\u2019s federally managed reservoirs \u2014 was created to deliver water supplies to users both north and south of the Delta.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis allocation update is disappointing.
