(FOX40.COM) \u2014 A Sacramento-based developer will buy more than half of Blue Diamond Growers\u2019 campus in Midtown with plans to transform the area into a mixed-use project.<\/p>\n

The company announced Tuesday that it had selected Bardis & Miry Development, LLC, to acquire 35 acres of the site, which sits in northern Midtown just east of 16th Street.<\/p>\n

Katherine Bardis-Miry and Bay Miry said in a statement they plan to redevelop the area into 1,000 to 2,000 housing units along with ground-floor retail stores and \u201ccommunity amenities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The developers pointed to the site\u2019s history and its proximity to Boulevard Park, Midtown and the American River Bike Trail.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognize the responsibility that comes with shaping a site of this significance and we aim to ensure the next chapter of this property reflects the values of the cooperative, the neighborhood and the city of Sacramento,\u201d the developers said. \u201cAs we move through the due diligence phase, our focus is on assessing the site and gathering the information needed to move forward responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, Blue Diamond announced it would close its historic manufacturing plant<\/a>, which employed more than 600 people, and transfer most of its operations to existing facilities in Turlock and Salida.<\/p>\n

The company says its corporate headquarters will remain on the campus until at least April 2030 through a three-year leaseback agreement.<\/p>\n

Blue Diamond also said it will retain \u201cabout 19 acres\u201d of its 50-plus acre site for inshell almond processing. Last month, the company said<\/a> it would continue employing at least 90 workers at the Sacramento site, a departure from its original announcement of a full closure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re excited about this next chapter for the site,\u201d CEO Kai Bockmann said in a statement. \u201cBlue Diamond has been part of Sacramento\u2019s story for generations, and we\u2019re proud to play a role in shaping its future.\u201d<\/p>\n

The redevelopment plans have already earned the endorsement of two key city leaders, Mayor Kevin McCarty and Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum. In a statement, they said the project is one of the area\u2019s largest infill housing development and will \u201cpermanently reshape Sacramento\u2019s central city.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to seeing thousands of new residential units over the next decade, along with vibrant mixed-use development that will help meet our housing needs and strengthen our urban core,\u201d McCarty and Pluckebaum said.<\/p>\n
