WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 The Treasury Department’s general counsel resigned after the IRS settled a $10 billion lawsuit with President Donald Trump over the leak of his tax returns.<\/p>\n

Treasury Department General Counsel Brian Morrissey resigned on Monday after the Justice Department launched a $1.776 billion \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund\u201d as part of the settlement, The Hill reported<\/a>. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said<\/a> that the fund would compensate “victims of lawfare and weaponization.”<\/p>\n

The Treasury Department will oversee the DOJ fund payouts into an account managed by a group of people that Blanche<\/a> appoints.<\/p>\n

Trump nominated Morrissey to be the Treasury’s general counsel last year, after he previously served as the principal deputy general counsel for the department and was a clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.<\/p>\n

A Treasury spokesperson confirmed Morrissey\u2019s resignation to The Hill on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
