{"id":325981,"date":"2026-05-21T09:43:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T09:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/325981\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T09:43:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T09:43:25","slug":"volvo-to-pay-197-million-after-hidden-pollution-device-found-in-california-truck-engines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/325981\/","title":{"rendered":"Volvo to pay $197 million after hidden pollution device found in California truck engines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Volvo Group North America has agreed to pay nearly $197 million to resolve allegations from California regulators that company\u2019s heavy-duty truck engines violated California emissions standards and certification requirements. <\/p>\n<p>About 10,000 diesel truck engines manufactured by Volvo were equipped with an undisclosed device, causing them to release excessive levels of<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2026-04-22\/44-of-americans-breathe-dangerously-polluted-air-in-california-its-82\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> smog-forming pollution<\/a> across California, according to the California Air Resources Board, the state agency that regulates air pollution and greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n<p>Volvo is <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/resources\/fact-sheets\/volvo-settlement-frequently-asked-questions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">developing a software fix<\/a> to repair many of these vehicles and extend their warranties at no cost to the owners. Eligible truck owners are expected to be notified of a non-mandatory recall on these trucks next year. <\/p>\n<p>CARB found inconsistencies in the Swedish automaker\u2019s data while testing trucks with Volvo engines from model year 2010 to 2016, which resulted in the investigation and ensuing settlement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case underscores why CARB\u2019s compliance testing and strong enforcement are essential to protecting the state\u2019s air quality and public health,\u201d said Lauren Sanchez, chair of the state Air Resources Board. \u201cOur responsibility goes beyond adopting regulations \u2014 we are committed to upholding them by identifying violations and holding companies accountable for meeting emissions standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the settlement, Volvo will pay $17.5 million in civil penalties to reimburse the state for the cost of the investigation and support its vehicle-testing operations.
