BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Thousands of festivalgoers are expected to gather near Buena Vista Lake this Memorial Day weekend for the start of Lightning in a Bottle, a five-day festival featuring music, art, camping and community events.

This year’s lineup includes artists such as Tinashe, Empire of the Sun and Zeds Dead, drawing attendees from around the region.

Before heading into the festival grounds, many attendees stopped at nearby gas stations and markets to stock up on ice, water and camping supplies while preparing for several days outdoors in Kern County heat.

For some, this year marks their first time attending the event.

“I’m excited about dancing and having fun with my friends,” said Eamon Byrne, who traveled from San Francisco for the festival.

Byrne said he prepared for the weekend by bringing “ice, water, and a lot of other things,” while also trying to stay cool during the expected high temperatures.

“I bought a really cheap portable fan on Amazon,” Byrne said. “I hope that does the trick.”

Other attendees say Lightning in a Bottle has become an annual tradition.

Nick Rose said this year marks his eighth time attending the festival.

“I went for the first time in 2016, and I tell people that I was born there,” Rose said.

Rose described the event as “a bit of a pilgrimage every year” and said the community atmosphere is what keeps bringing him back.

“Everybody there is always looking out for each other,” Rose said.

He also shared advice for first-time attendees preparing for several days of camping.

“Make sure you have a pillow, make sure you have sunscreen, earplugs camel pack, plenty of water,” Rose said. “You’ll be fine.”

Karina Mann, who attended the festival for the first time last year, said the sense of community stood out most to her.

“Last year, I made a bunch of random friends, and everybody’s so friendly,” Mann said. “Everybody’s willing to give you something, and you give things in return.”

Mann said she is taking additional precautions this year because of dust concerns.

“The only thing that I’m a little bit concerned about is the dust in the air, because it’s really bad,” Mann said. “Last year, I lost my voice after the first day.”

Festival organizers say they plan to help mitigate exposure to Valley Fever by increasing dust control efforts through additional wood chips, more frequent water trucks, artificial turf in high-traffic areas and reducing the use of motorized vehicles across the festival grounds.

Attendees say preparation remains a major part of the festival experience, especially with warm temperatures expected throughout the weekend.

“I think I didn’t realize it was maybe such a community event,” Mann said. “The community was the best part of it.”
