{"id":326378,"date":"2026-05-21T16:48:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T16:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/326378\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T16:48:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T16:48:13","slug":"driver-sentenced-in-oakland-county-hit-and-run-that-killed-veteran-in-wheelchair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/326378\/","title":{"rendered":"Driver sentenced in Oakland County hit-and-run that killed veteran in wheelchair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">OAK PARK, Mich. \u2013 A 29-year-old man will spend less than a year in jail for a hit-and-run that killed a 71-year-old veteran in a wheelchair in Oakland County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Devin Asa-Armon Light was sentenced Thursday, May 21, to 330 days in jail, followed by two years of probation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The crash happened early Nov. 22, 2025, in Oak Park <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/23\/disabled-veteran-fatally-struck-in-oak-park-driver-sought-by-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickondetroit.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/23\/disabled-veteran-fatally-struck-in-oak-park-driver-sought-by-police\/\">on Nine Mile Road, near Greenfield Road and Harding Street<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Police said the victim, who was in a wheelchair, was struck by an eastbound dark-colored sedan, believed to be a Hyundai. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the 71-year-old man died at the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Detroit police later recovered an abandoned 2024 Hyundai Elantra that matched the suspect vehicle. Light, of Southfield, was taken into custody in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He was charged with failure to stop at the scene of a crash resulting in death.
