The minutes, released on Wednesday, highlighted how the central bank’s internal debate from when to start cutting rates to whether another hike may be needed.

Most economists expected the Fed to cut rates at least once this year at the start of 2026, with inflation cooling and the effects of President Donald Trump’s tariffs fading away. Those expectations have been dashed after the war with Iran led to spiking oil prices that have renewed upward pressure on inflation.

A majority of officials highlighted “some policy firming would likely become appropriate if inflation were to continue to run persistently above 2 percent,” according to the minutes.

“To address this possibility, many participants indicated that they would have preferred removing the language from the postmeeting statement that suggested an easing bias regarding the likely direction of the Committee’s future interest rate decisions.” The phrase referred to language some believe suggested the Fed’s next move was more likely to be a rate cut than increase.

April’s meeting, where the benchmark interest rate was left unchanged, was one of the most divisive in decades with several committee members objecting to language they believed leaned too heavily toward future cuts. Many Fed watchers are expecting disagreement within the Federal Open Market Committee to remain a common theme moving forward as they navigate price concerns and an uncertain outlook.

Wall Street has increased bets on the next move from the Fed being a rate increase with the odds of at least one quarter-point hike reaching nearly 50% in futures markets, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool. Still, the Fed is also trying to keep a recently stabilized labor market on track and growth moving in the right direction.

“Financial markets are pricing in Fed rate hikes over the next 12 months, but we believe the bar is high. The Fed will likely talk tough but opt not to follow through with tightening monetary policy, as that would risk hurting the economy,” Ryan Sweet, chief global economist at Oxford Economics, wrote in an analysis.

Recent reports on inflation have raised concerns about the rate of price increases accelerating again. Consumer inflation hit a nearly three-year high at 3.8% in April, while producer prices climbed 6% from the year prior, the fastest since December of 2022.

Much of the uptick in inflation is due to the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway where some 20% of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass through. Higher oil prices quickly filter into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and transportation costs that can then increase prices across the economy.

But “core” inflation, which strips volatile food and energy categories, was also elevated in a potentially troubling sign for the Fed.

Uncertainty about reopening the strait has prompted concerns inflation could become entrenched in the economy and sparked disagreements within the central bank over how long the war’s impact will last.

“Participants assessed that both upside risks to inflation and downside risks to employment remained elevated. Participants generally observed that the conflict in the Middle East could have significant implications for the balance of these risks and for the appropriate path of monetary policy,” the minutes say.

An energy shock has complicated what was already a challenging balance for the Fed to find this year.

The committee’s increasingly hawkish debate on inflation comes as it is preparing for a new chair to take over for Jerome Powell, who has been the subject of intense criticism from the president for not delivering on repeated calls for rate cuts. Kevin Warsh, who recently advocated for rate cuts but promised to be independent of the White House, will be at the helm for the FOMC’s next policy meeting June 16-17.

Trump will hold a swearing-in ceremony at the White House for Warsh on Friday, the first to take place at the White House since 1987 and first to be attended by a president since 2006 when President George W. Bush attended for Ben Bernanke.

Trump has been explicit in his expectation for the Fed to cut rates with a new chair but appeared to back off his demands for rate cuts as Warsh’s swearing-in nears.

“I’m going to let him do what he wants to do,” Trump told the Washington Examiner. “He’s a very talented guy, he’s going to be fine, he’s going to do a good job.”

WASHINGTON (TNND) — A majority of Federal Reserve officials believe higher interest rates might be necessary if recently…

[35
151,153,152
post-327852","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-bakersfield","tag-bakersfield","tag-bakersfield-headlines","tag-bakersfield-news
["GET
