ELK GROVE, Calif. — The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announced that the first dead bird of the season has tested positive for West Nile virus in Sacramento County.

District Manager Gary Goodman said the discovery serves as an early warning sign that West Nile virus is active in the region.

The district noted that recent late spring rain followed by early hot temperatures have created favorable conditions for mosquitoes to thrive, potentially signaling a busy mosquito season ahead.

Earlier this week, officials also confirmed the first mosquito sample of the season to test positive for West Nile virus in Sacramento County.

In response, the district said it will increase mosquito trapping and surveillance efforts in the area to identify breeding sources and reduce mosquito activity.

Residents are encouraged to use insect repellent, drain standing water and report dead birds to the California Department of Public Health hotline at 877-WNV-BIRD.

So far this year, Sacramento County has recorded one mosquito sample and one dead bird testing positive for West Nile virus, while no activity has been detected in Yolo County.
