Los Angeles mayoral hopeful Spencer Pratt brought his fight for the city\u2019s future<\/a> straight into the heart of downtown Saturday, where roughly 300 people packed the ballroom of the historic downtown Alexandria Hotel.<\/p>\n

The event doubled as a meet-and-greet and get-out-the-vote rally, drawing a mix of longtime residents, property owners and younger voters who admitted they usually tune out City Hall politics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live downtown. It\u2019s nasty here. We gotta clean it up,\u201d Van Arthur told The California Post after casting his vote for Pratt.<\/p>\n

Arthur said it was the first election he had ever participated in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to trust people,\u201d he said. \u201cBut when people like Spencer are coming and really putting boots to pavement, I respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Downtown Los Angeles has spent years and billions<\/a> of dollars trying to reinvent itself as more than a commuter district.<\/p>\n

Luxury apartments have risen, restaurants and entertainment venues moved in and developers pitched a vision of urban revival.<\/p>\n

Isaac Shomof owner of the Alexandria Hotel and more than 1,500 residential units downtown, hosted the event and called the downtown area one of Los Angeles\u2019 most unique neighborhoods<\/a>, adding that while major investments have poured into over the years, public safety has to remain a top priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you can see how pretty and beautiful this downtown is, because you don\u2019t find that beauty anywhere else in the city of LA,\u201d Shomof said.<\/p>\n

But he said maintaining occupancy has become increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cTenants do not like to be downtown due to the crime and homelessness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shomof said he had previously brought concerns and ideas directly to Mayor Karen Bass but felt little had changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I try to look less like a girl because I don\u2019t feel safe, which is weird,\u201d she told The California Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think just more common sense. No egos, just let\u2019s fix it,\u201d she said, explaining why she cast her vote for Pratt on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Raul Claros, founder of California Rising and a candidate for Los Angeles City Council District 1 <\/a>running against Eunisses Hernandez, also attended and framed Pratt\u2019s appearance as part of a broader political backlash building across Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very clear: anybody but Eunice Hernandez, anybody but Karen Bass,\u201d Claros said. \u201cIf Spencer Pratt\u2019s the man, then we\u2019re here to listen and roll up our sleeves and clean this place up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others described a larger fight over downtown\u2019s future, envisioning a neighborhood where families stay, children walk to school and residents can rely on transit, businesses and public spaces without feeling pushed elsewhere.<\/p>\n

One resident noted downtown generates roughly 30% of the city\u2019s tax revenue and argued Los Angeles rises and falls with the health of its urban core.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen downtown\u2019s successful, all of LA is really thriving.\u201d<\/p>\n

The downtown push also came as Pratt\u2019s campaign appears to be gaining momentum in the race\u2019s closing days.<\/p>\n

Campaign filings released Friday<\/a> showed Pratt raised roughly $2.7 million between April 19 and May 15, nearly matching the approximately $2.8 million Mayor Karen Bass has raised since entering the race in 2024.<\/p>\n

The filings show Pratt pulled in 8,490 contributions during that period and entered the final sprint with roughly $1.42 million cash on hand, slightly ahead of Bass and mayoral rival Nithya Raman.<\/p>\n

With the June 2 primary approaching, Pratt has increasingly centered his campaign around public safety, voter frustration and reviving neighborhoods many residents believe City Hall has left behind.<\/p>\n
