The man accused of shooting a woman in front of her son and stealing her car at an Orion Township shopping plaza has been charged and arraigned in court.<\/p>\n

Mauriel Dashawn Hearn<\/a> was charged with carjacking, assault with intent to murder, fleeing a police officer, resisting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon and three counts of felony firearm.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened on May 19 outside Baldwin Commons Plaza near Baldwin and Brown roads<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Hearn appeared to have been waiting in the parking lot before targeting the woman, who was with her young son.<\/p>\n

The Oakland County Prosecutor\u2019s Office said Hearn confronted the woman in the parking lot and demanded her car keys. He then allegedly shot the woman in front of her son.<\/p>\n

Hearn allegedly took her purse and drove away in her car. <\/p>\n

The woman was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to her hip. According to officials, the bullet came dangerously close to a major artery.<\/p>\n

Authorities said they immediately issued a broadcast alert for the stolen vehicle and used the department\u2019s FLOCK camera system to track its movements northbound from the scene.<\/p>\n

While Hearn was leading a police chase, he was going over 100 mph before hitting a guardrail in Groveland Township. He then allegedly jumped out of the car and tried to run away. He was eventually arrested.<\/p>\n

Hearn is a 25-year-old man from Ann Arbor. It\u2019s not known why he was in Orion Township on May 19.<\/p>\n

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Hearn has a violent criminal history and has been uncooperative with investigators since his arrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s currently on probation for hog-tying a woman, duct taping her and suffocating her with a plastic bag over her head, and he\u2019s back out on the street saying no harm, no foul. Is that how the justice system works for our victims?\u201d Bouchard said on May 20.<\/p>\n

Local 4 reached out to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor\u2019s Office regarding Bouchard\u2019s statements on the handling of Hearn\u2019s previous charges. They sent over the following statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cAs to the 2024 case, it is incorrect to suggest that the suspect received any meaningful leniency from our office as a result of his plea. He pleaded guilty, as charged, to one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and one count of assault and battery. No reduction in charges were given or offered by our office. His sentence of probation was consistent with Michigan\u2019s sentencing guidelines.\u201d <\/p>\n

Hearn was arraigned in court on Friday, May 22.<\/p>\n

During his arraignment, Hearn\u2019s defense attorney entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf, and his bond was denied.<\/p>\n

His attorney requested to file a competency motion, but the court ruled that the motion could be filed in the next court hearing.<\/p>\n

He is scheduled to return to court on June 2 for a probable cause conference and on June 9 for a preliminary examination.<\/p>\n
