The state\u2019s standardized test scores<\/a> are in, and some Fresno County<\/a> school districts saw noticeable increases in their year-over-year results.<\/p>\n

Statewide English language arts and math scores are up by about two percentage points \u2014 from 47% passing to 49% in reading, and 35% to 37% in math \u2014 but some Fresno County school districts saw bigger gains.<\/p>\n

Overall, this year\u2019s test scores show that many school districts are still struggling to recover the student learning loss from the pandemic, though some local districts saw measurable improvements from the prior year.<\/p>\n

Kingsburg Joint Union School District rose its overall reading scores from 59.45% in 2024 to 67.19% proficiency, a gain of about eight percentage points, while reading scores in Golden Plains Unified jumped from 9.44% to 26.39%, or about five percentage points.<\/p>\n

Kings Canyon Unified saw about a five percentage point increase in math (from 37.89% proficiency last year to 42.14%) and science scores (26.94% to 31.34%).<\/p>\n

Sanger Unified<\/a> is the largest Fresno County school district to see a notable increase in its standardized test scores, particularly with its reading and science scores. The district\u2019s overall reading scores rose from 48.76% proficiency to 53.05%. Its science scores rose about five percentage points, as well, from 31.90% to 36.21%.<\/p>\n

\u201cProficiency is a certain bar that kids reach, but our expectation is that every child is going to grow. Some are going to be close to that bar and beat it, others might be far below \u2014 but we\u2019re going to still expect a growth,\u201d said Sanger Unified associate superintendent Tim Lopez. \u201cIt\u2019s not only the ones that are close to proficiency that we\u2019re going to focus on. It\u2019s all kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Small, rural districts in the county also saw significant improvement in their test scores.<\/p>\n

Clay Joint Elementary School District saw the biggest jump in the Fresno area, as its science scores increased by nearly 25 full percentage points, 40.67% of students passing last year to 65%. With a population of 246 students, it\u2019s also one of the smallest districts on this list \u2014 second to Alvina Elementary School District, which has 169 students and ELA scores that improved by about 7 percentage points, from 40.86% to 47.78%.<\/p>\n

Washington Colony Elementary School District saw improved science scores as well, increasing the district of 414 students\u2019 pass rate by nine percentage points, from 14.59% to 23.46%.<\/p>\n

Most students are tested in English language arts and math annually between third and eighth grade, as well as 11th grade.
