SacRT invites public feedback on a proposed $164M streetcar project linking West Sacramento and downtown across Tower Bridge.<\/p>\n

SACRAMENTO, Calif \u2014 SacRT<\/a> will begin gathering public feedback on Tuesday for a proposed streetcar project connecting West Sacramento and downtown Sacramento across Tower Bridge.<\/p>\n

The first of three community workshops is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at SacRT\u2019s auditorium on Q Street. Transit officials say the meetings are meant to gather input from residents and businesses before construction moves forward on the Downtown Riverfront Streetcar Project.<\/p>\n

The proposed route would run through the center of Tower Bridge, removing one lane of traffic in each direction as part of an effort to improve connectivity between West Sacramento and downtown Sacramento and make it easier for people to travel along the riverfront.<\/p>\n

Downtown Sacramento visitors said the city\u2019s transportation system should continue growing alongside the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecently, there’s been a conversation of trying to get more of an uptick and more of an up spark and have more traffic come through here. But obviously, with more traffic, there’s complications,\u201d said Matthew Johnson, a Sacramento visitor.<\/p>\n

SacRT spokesperson Jessica Gonzalez said the project has been years in the making.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project will connect the cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento across Tower Bridge,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cThis has been kind of a long time coming. West Sacramento and the city of Sacramento have been really interested in moving this project forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project includes three new stations, including one near Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, before crossing Tower Bridge.<\/p>\n

West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero said the streetcar could help support growth in the Bridge District and prepare for future expansion connected to Major League Baseball.<\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially where we have Sutter Health Park, which is an active destination, especially today, where we see the A’s and a good number of people, sellout crowds,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cHoping with the Major League Baseball expansion as we’re planning that we have something in place ready to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

A second station would be added near Second and Capitol streets before the route turns at Third Street and continues to N Street. The proposed line would also connect to the current light rail system and travel near Sacramento Valley Station, where the Railyards project is under development.<\/p>\n

Visitors in Old Sacramento said they hope the streetcar could ease crowded parking conditions downtown.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re driving around here for at least 20-30 minutes tops, so most of your day is spent around trying to find parking, trying to avoid heavy crowds of traffic,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cInevitably, not finding any parking because the parking garage is just slammed.\u201d<\/p>\n

SacRT officials said the $164 million project is already fully funded through federal and state grants and that the money legally cannot be used for other purposes.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez said community feedback collected during the workshops will help shape the project as contractors come on board.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think we have a good plan in place, but obviously, when we get the contractor on board, it’s really important to let them know what we heard at these workshops too to make sure that we’re really following the needs and the wants of our community,\u201d Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n

SacRT anticipates construction could begin early next year after selecting a contractor by the end of this year. Officials say one of the additional workshops planned for June will include a virtual participation option.<\/p>\n
