Sacramento International Airport may face disruptions as officials consider potentially removing Customs agents from airports in sanctuary cities.<\/p>\n

SACRAMENTO, Calif \u2014 Sacramento International Airport could face disruptions under proposed changes to Customs and Border Patrol personnel at airports in sanctuary cities, according to a report by ABC affiliate KGO and Congressman Kevin Kiley (I-Rocklin).<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump first raised the possibility months ago, and Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin reiterated the position during an interview Wednesday on Fox News, KGO<\/a> reported. Mullin said plans are being considered to stop customs processing at airports in cities that don’t cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, however no formal policy has been announced, according to KGO.<\/p>\n

Congressman Kiley, whose district includes parts of the Sacramento area, asked the administration to reconsider the proposal in a letter to Mullin<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the letter, Kiley said removing Customs and Border Protection personnel from these airports would negatively impact millions of Americans and could cause major airports to stop their international flights. He specifically named SMF, along with airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego, as facilities that could be affected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kiley added that some local governments are required under state law to maintain sanctuary policies, even if local officials would prefer to comply with federal immigration enforcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the proposal centers on sanctuary cities, Kiley also argued the effects would extend beyond those jurisdictions, noting that many non-sanctuary cities rely on airports to fuel local economies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Early reaction from local organizations and travelers has been cautious, with many waiting to see whether the administration follows through, according to KGO.<\/p>\n

ABC10 reached out to SMF for comment regarding the proposal and potential impacts, but they directed inquiries to DHS.<\/p>\n
