California Governor Gavin Newsom said Wednesday he wants the state to impose a 100 percent tax on any resident who receives monetary relief through the Justice Department\u2019s $1.8 billion \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Newsom, a Democrat who has fervently pushed back against President Donald Trump\u2019s policies, told reporters he was thinking of ideas to combat the $1.776 billion fund<\/a> that would allow anyone who believes they have been wrongly prosecuted to request taxpayer money.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone from California that receives any of those funds, we want to tax 100 percent of those proceeds and that\u2019s an action the state of California can take,\u201d Newsom said during a press conference.<\/p>\n

Newsom indicated the new tax would be implemented either through the state legislature or as a ballot measure, saying it would need \u201cyour support.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the latest effort by Trump\u2019s opponents to push back<\/a> against the unusual multi-billion-dollar fund<\/a> that emerged as a settlement from a lawsuit between Trump, his adult sons, and his business and the IRS. The DOJ has sought to justify the fund by insisting the Trumps would not be eligible for a portion of it and that it\u2019s open to anyone.<\/p>\n

Newsom, a Democratic Governor, said anyone in the state of California who accepts money from the $1.8 billion fund would face steep taxes (Reuters)<\/p>\n

But lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have denounced the so-called \u201cslush fund,\u201d believing it would allow people such as the January 6, 2021, rioters to seek taxpayer compensation despite having once attacked the Capitol.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who assault cops and overthrow democracy don\u2019t deserve a taxpayer-funded payday,\u201d Newsom later said in an X post<\/a>, referring to the pot of money as a \u201cslush fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newsom\u2019s suggested tax is just the latest effort from lawmakers to oppose the fund. In New York, Democratic state assemblyman Alex Bores suggested imposing a 100 percent tax<\/a> on any New Yorker who collects money from the fund.<\/p>\n

New Jersey state Senator Andrew Zwicker told Policito<\/a> he was working to draft a bill to set up a 100 percent tax on the fund, calling the idea a \u201cbrilliant counter move.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even Republican lawmakers have voiced opposition to Trump\u2019s \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund,\u201d which the DOJ announced without informing members of Congress beforehand.<\/p>\n

Republican Rep. Mike Flood told constituents this week that he \u201cnever approved\u201d the fund and that no January 6 rioter should be entitled to monetary relief. GOP Senator Mitch McConnell called it \u201cutterly stupid\u201d and \u201cmorally wrong.\u201d Senator Thom Tillis referred to the fund as \u201cstupid on stilts.\u201d<\/p>\n
