HOUSTON, May 27 (Reuters) – A cargo of oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve headed to California this month for the first \u200btime ever, ship tracking service Kpler said.<\/p>\n
The unusual movement highlights \u200cthe redrawing of trade flows and shipping routes as the Iran war has cut off supplies of Middle Eastern crude. California, once a top oil-producing state in the U.S., has in \u200brecent years become more dependent on crude imports, including about 230,000 \u200bbarrels per day last year from the Middle East. Availability \u2060of alternative crude oil is also limited due to competing demand from Asia.<\/p>\n
About \u200b460,000 barrels of Bayou Choctaw Sweet crude headed to Chevron\u2019s Richmond refinery in \u200bCalifornia, while another 50,000 barrels of the same grade discharged at Chevron\u2019s El Segundo refinery, Kpler said, citing bills of lading.<\/p>\n
Tanker Red Moon had loaded nearly 980,000 barrels of \u200bBayou Choctaw Sweet in Louisiana, according to Kpler, and discharged the cargo at \u200bthe Atlantic Terminal on the east coast of Panama in early May. Chevron was listed \u200cas \u2060the seller of the cargo, according to Kpler.<\/p>\n
A 131 km (81.4 miles) pipeline can transport crude oil from the east coast to the Pacific Terminal on the west coast of Panama.<\/p>\n
Supertanker Pascagoula Voyager, chartered by Chevron, loaded about 2 \u200bmillion barrels of crude \u200bat the Pacific \u2060Terminal and headed to the U.S. West Coast, the ship tracking service said. The vessel was co-loaded with Guyana’s \u200bUnity Gold crude oil.<\/p>\n
The supertanker unloaded the strategic petroleum reserve \u200bcrude to \u2060two smaller ships that took the cargoes to the refineries in California, Kpler said.<\/p>\n
Chevron was moving crude and gasoline blendstocks under the Jones Act fleet and \u2060under the \u200bJones Act waiver program to help supply \u200bCalifornia in a time of significant energy stress, spokesman Ross Allen said. The company declined to provide \u200bdetails on the particular shipment.<\/p>\n
