In 1895, New Zealand entomologist George Hudson proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/daylight-savings-time-arizona-florida-spring-forward-science\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:shifting the clocks;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">shifting the clocks<\/a> to create more daylight for studying bugs, according to National Geographic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For a brief period, clocks were moved forward as a <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/2023\/7-things-to-know-about-daylight-saving-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:global attempt to save energy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">global attempt to save energy<\/a> during World War I, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Germany implemented daylight saving time in 1916 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/coloradan\/2022\/11\/07\/history-daylight-saving-time#:~:text=The%20real%20history%20of%20daylight%20saving%20time%20is%20much%20more%20complex.&amp;text=It%20was%20first%20introduced%20in,suit%2C%20adopting%20DST%20in%201918.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:United States followed suit;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">United States followed suit<\/a> two years later, according to The University of Colorado, Boulder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">President Franklin Roosevelt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/daylight-saving-time-instituted\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:revived the practice;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">revived the practice<\/a> during World War II before the Uniform Time Act of 1966 established a biannual time change similar to what we use today.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Daylight saving time ends when clocks \u201cfall back\u201d on the first Sunday of November every year.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762028659_739_f5e2fa16c32ea87ac01f9d4ae522f3b3.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Daylight saving time ends when clocks \u201cfall back\u201d on the first Sunday of November every year.<\/p>\n<p>Which US states don\u2019t observe daylight saving time?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Not everyone observes daylight saving time in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/regulations\/time-act\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Uniform Time Act;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Uniform Time Act<\/a> allows states to choose whether to participate in daylight saving time or stay in standard time all year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Currently, only Hawaii and most of Arizona observe permanent standard time.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t California vote against twice-a-year time shift?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">California has made moves to abolish biannual clock changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The majority of Californians voted in 2018 to establish permanent, year-round standard time or permanent, year-round daylight saving time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Proposition 7, also known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/California_Proposition_7,_Legislative_Power_to_Change_Daylight_Saving_Time_Measure_%282018%29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Legislative Power to Change Daylight Saving Time Measure;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Legislative Power to Change Daylight Saving Time Measure<\/a>, received 59% of the vote in favor of the change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nearly seven years later, state lawmakers have yet to pass any legislation to shift California to permanent daylight saving or standard time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The legislation would need a two-thirds vote in the California State Assembly and California State Senate, plus the governor\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Congressional action would also be required if the state wanted to make the change to daylight saving time all year long.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Are you ready for a little extra sleep?
