Sacramento County sheriff\u2019s deputies on Friday searched a medical building in Carmichael after receiving what turned about to be unfounded reports of an intruder.<\/p>\n
Authorities received reports of an intruder about 12:15 p.m. at the Mercy Physicians Plaza building on the Mercy San Juan Medical Center campus in the 6500 block of Coyle, just west of Dewey Drive.<\/p>\n
Deputies arrived and conducted a methodical search of the building, looking into every room on the three floors of the building, according to radio dispatch recordings reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.<\/p>\n
Staff and others inside the building reported the medical facility had been locked down as authorities searched. Shortly before 2 p.m., Sacramento County Sheriff\u2019s Office spokesperson Sgt. Ed Igoe announced that deputies had searched the building and found no intruder inside.<\/p>\n
He said the reports of an intruder had been deemed a \u201cfalse alarm,\u201d and the building was being reopened.<\/p>\n
The incident began after a caller reported that someone inside the medical building had told her there was a gunman, but the caller never saw the armed man, Igoe said.<\/p>\n
Along with sheriff\u2019s deputies, officers from the California Highway Patrol, the Citrus Heights Police Department, the Sacramento Police Department and the Rancho Cordova Police Department responded to the medical building.<\/p>\n
Igoe said the entire medical building was cleared and evacuated as deputies investigated. Deputies discovered the identity of the original man who claimed there was a gun. Igoe said that man was detained by Citrus Heights police in the area and turned over to deputies.<\/p>\n
No injuries were reported, Igoe said, and deputies did not find a gun.<\/p>\n
Sheriff\u2019s officials later arrested the caller, a 25-year-old man, on suspicion of knowingly reporting a false emergency.
