{"id":339539,"date":"2026-05-30T22:34:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T22:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/339539\/"},"modified":"2026-05-30T22:34:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T22:34:08","slug":"family-seeks-answers-after-oakland-park-standoff-ends-with-deputy-involved-shooting-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/339539\/","title":{"rendered":"Family seeks answers after Oakland Park standoff ends with deputy-involved shooting death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">OAKLAND PARK, Fla. \u2014 Family members of Dominick \u201cKevin\u201d Almonte say he was loving and cared for by many people, and they are mourning his death following an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2026\/05\/29\/deputies-respond-to-barricaded-man-in-oakland-park\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2026\/05\/29\/deputies-respond-to-barricaded-man-in-oakland-park\/\">hours-long standoff with deputies in Oakland Park.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Maria Almonte said she knew something was wrong when authorities asked her to sit down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey tell me to sit down. When they tell me to sit down I already knew that they killed my baby. My baby died,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Maria Almonte said her son was killed after a standoff with deputies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut he was a good kid. He just had mental issues, but he was a helpful, kind person,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Investigators said deputies responded to the Racquet Club community in Oakland Park on Friday night after receiving reports from neighbors about a man armed with a knife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to Maria Almonte, her son had argued with a neighbor before the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe had an argument with a neighbor and that neighbor always antagonized him,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I guess he kind of just went off and came out chasing with a knife, but he went back in the house. And that\u2019s when the neighbors are calling the cops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Deputies evacuated the area and spent several hours attempting to negotiate with the barricaded man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Investigators said the situation escalated at one point, and deputies opened fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThey shot him four times and he doesn\u2019t even have a gun. You\u2019re going to shoot somebody with a knife?\u201d Maria Almonte said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She said she is still searching for answers and has not yet been allowed to see her son\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut I want to see it for myself. Just to have some closure that I see my baby. That it is him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
