Long Beach Wilson junior sprinter Clara Adams was not going to be denied her state titles this season.

Adams sought and found redemption by winning the 400-meter state title in 52.28 seconds at the CIF State Track and Field championship meet at Buchanan High School in Clovis Saturday.

She also won the 200-meter title in 23.40, storming down the homestretch to pull off a rare double championship.

Adams initially won the 400-meter state title as a sophomore when she ran for North Salinas High School. However, she was disqualified by CIF officials for unsportsmanlike behavior related to her post-race celebration of spraying a fire extinguisher on her shoes before the race results were finalized.

The Wilson girls team scored 23 points in the 400, led by Adams (1st), junior Saniah Varnado (2nd), and sophomore Brookyln Fowler (4th), which vaulted them into first place in the team title competition early in the meet. The Bruins secured the program’s fourth consecutive team title with a school-record 70 points. It is the school’s seventh state title overall. Santiago was a distant second with 30 points. Rosary was third with 28.5 points.

Varnado won the girls 300-meter hurdles title in a personal-best time of 39.95, breaking Olympic gold medalist Lashinda Demus’ school record of 39.98, which at the time was a national record.

Wilson’s quartet of Brooke Blue, Fowler, Adams and Varnado ended the meet by winning the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:36.17. The Bruins also scored points in the triple jump, 800, 4×100 and 4×800 relays.

Wilson’s Kennedy Bryant, Riley Jones, Kimani Tindal and Shirayah Lewis-Williams finished third in 4×800 in a new school record time of 8:53.37.
